Earlier this month, Microsoft surpassed Apple to become the world’s most valuable company. Thanks to its investment in OpenAI, ChatGPT’s parent company, Microsoft is now considered a leader in the generative AI race among tech giants including Alphabet, Amazon, Oracle, and Meta Platforms.

Microsoft has integrated OpenAI's artificial intelligence technology into its software, a move that will help its cloud computing business recover strongly in the third quarter of 2023. Being at the forefront of AI also gives Microsoft more opportunities to challenge Google's dominance in the search industry.

In contrast, Apple is facing weak demand, including for the iPhone - its golden goose. Demand in China is falling as the economy has not fully recovered from Covid-19. In addition, Apple is also facing increasing competition from Huawei there.

“I think AI is the key to Microsoft’s appeal to investors,” said Brad Reback, an analyst at Stifel. He said Apple doesn’t have a “clear AI story” and iPhone sales are slowing.

Microsoft shares rose nearly 57% last year. They are up 7% this year. Apple shares are up 48% and 1%, respectively.
