According to statistics from the European Commission (EC), the unusually dry winter across southern parts of the European continent has reduced soil moisture and increased the risk of a repeat of the wildfire disaster in 2022, when 785,000 hectares of forest in Europe were destroyed - double the annual average over the past 16 years.
At a press conference in Brussels (Belgium), Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that the forest fires, especially at the beginning of the year, were once again evidence of the climate emergency that humanity is experiencing.
More than 500 firefighters with the support of 18 firefighting aircraft worked throughout the night of March 23 and March 24 to control the fire in the village of Villanueva de Viver in the Valencia region.
The 2022-2023 winter in the Northern Hemisphere was the second warmest on record, and unusually dry, European scientists say. Southeast and western Europe experienced drier-than-average winter weather, while February saw record low humidity in some areas.
According to the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS), 2022 was the most severe year for forest fires in Spain, with 493 fires burning 307,000 hectares of land. The number of forest fires in 2023 is forecast to remain high.
