Treating cancer while solving exam questions: 'Warrior K' excelled in achieving 28 points in the university entrance exam

Receiving the national high school exam results with 28 points in block A00, male student Truong Huy Bach and his family could not contain their happiness. Because this is the result of Bach's continuous efforts and fighting for more than 2 years while he was being treated for cancer.

Don't be discouraged by cancer

Exactly 2 years ago, while being an excellent student at Phu Binh High School, Thai Nguyen province, student Truong Huy Bach was diagnosed with acute myeloid leukemia (blood cancer) when he went to the Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion for examination.

Although very sad and disappointed, with the encouragement and care of her family, she embarked on a journey to fight this terrible disease.

Since childhood, Bach has been an intelligent student with a special passion for math, physics, and chemistry. During nearly a year of treatment at the emergency resuscitation department of the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion with 4 chemotherapy sessions, despite having to postpone a year of school, Bach still did not stop studying right on his hospital bed.

Huy Bach shared that every time he solves problems or does homework, he feels excited and motivated to forget the pain and fatigue caused by chemotherapy.

MSc. Phan Thi Thuy Trang, Department of Emergency Resuscitation, Central Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, shared: "Normally, patients receiving chemotherapy are very tired, many people are so tired that they cannot eat or drink, but Bach can receive chemotherapy in the morning and then sit up to study at night. The doctors and nurses at the hospital are all impressed with Bach because of his diligence and eagerness to learn.

I still remember at 8:03 on July 16, Bach texted me with his university entrance exam results. I immediately shared it with my colleagues in the department and the whole department burst into happiness."

Doctor Trang remembers the exact moment Bach received the good news, because at exactly 8am on July 16, the exam scores of the candidates were announced. Immediately after knowing the scores and informing his family, Bach immediately informed the doctors and nurses - the people who had encouraged, cared for and motivated him during his days in the hospital.

"I am very grateful to the doctors and nurses at the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion, and to you who helped me overcome the most difficult period when I was studying for the university entrance exam. I never thought that I could continue studying and taking the exam even though I had cancer, but the advancement of science and the dedication of the doctors and nurses have helped me achieve my dream," Huy Bach confided.

During the treatment process, Bach always had his family, teachers and friends by his side, giving him motivation and hope.

"When I was being treated at the hospital, my brother who was working in Japan came back to Vietnam for a while to take care of me. My parents also took turns staying at the hospital. My family gave me all the best things so that I could be treated and continue studying.

"If it weren't for my parents and brother, I probably wouldn't have been able to overcome this disease," the student shared.

With a special love for studying, Huy Bach always proactively plans to review and solve problems. In 2023, when he was in 11th grade, he had to put his school year on hold due to frequent hospital visits. At the hospital, he continued to study on his own to keep up with his peers.

Because of poor health, Huy Bach could not study much even though he was very studious, so he always tried to listen to lectures and memorize carefully in class. When he had time, he asked his teachers at high school to explain more.

For math, I took online courses with a teacher on Facebook. For physics and chemistry, I only studied in class and self-studied at home.

Sweet fruit of 'warrior K'

Before being diagnosed with the disease, Bach was an excellent student at Phu Binh High School, winning third prize in grade 10 and second prize in grade 11 in chemistry at the Thai Nguyen province's excellent student competition.

After treatment and returning to school, he maintained his form and continued to "reap" achievements in the provincial excellent student exam with third prize in chemistry in grade 12.

Ms. Tran Linh (teacher at Phu Binh High School, Thai Nguyen Province) said: "Bach's exam in 2025 is the first year of taking the exam under the new program. Although he only studied the new program starting from the second semester of grade 12, thanks to his diligence and efforts, Bach caught up very quickly.

When the exam results came out, I thanked myself, but I felt like I had to thank her. I thank the students who fueled the teachers' persistent journey with their profession. I thank them for trying and not giving up."

With a total score of 28, Bach's A00 block scores are math 9; physics 9.25; chemistry 9.75; he wishes to study at Hanoi National University of Education, Faculty of Mathematics.

Bach confided that his dream is to become a math teacher. He feels that teaching is suitable for him and wants to research and learn more about math.
