On January 14, the Danish people officially welcomed the new King Frederik X after Queen Margrethe II signed the abdication statement.
After a horse-drawn carriage procession through the streets of the Danish capital Copenhagen, Queen Margrethe II signed her abdication statement at a meeting of the Council of State at Christiansborg Palace.
Earlier, on the first day of 2024, Queen Margrethe II announced her abdication after 52 years of reign, becoming the first monarch in nearly 900 years in this country to voluntarily give up the throne. Thousands of people gathered outside the palace where the succession ceremony took place with excitement and joy. Many crowded streets were flooded with the red and white colors of the Danish flag. Some shops hung pictures of Queen Margrethe II and the new King Frederik X.
