WHO has called on the international community to step up measures to prevent the spread of measles - an infectious disease that is spreading in 58 countries, including the US, where two children have died from the disease.
According to WHO, measles vaccination is a safe and effective way to prevent the spread of the virus.
Ms Kate O'Brien, Director of WHO's Vaccine Department, stressed that because of the high level of infectiousness of the measles virus, a case appearing anywhere can quickly become a global threat.
According to Ms. O'Brien, the increase in measles cases is mainly due to the decline in vaccination rates - a consequence of health disruptions during the Covid-19 pandemic. WHO recommends that countries urgently promote vaccination, especially among children, to prevent the rapid and dangerous spread of measles globally.
Measles is an acute infectious disease caused by the Polinosa Morbillarum virus, often causing fever and rash. The disease is highly contagious through the air when the patient talks, coughs, sneezes, etc. and can cause outbreaks. Currently, there is no specific treatment for measles.
The disease can heal itself over time, combined with medication, rest, and supportive diet. However, in children with low resistance such as infants, the disease can progress severely and cause complications later.
