Luong Tam Commune promotes sustainable poverty reduction solutions

With many practical solutions such as supporting housing construction, creating livelihoods, preferential loans, vocational training, etc., Luong Tam commune (Can Tho city) has helped many poor households improve their living conditions, gradually rising up to escape poverty sustainably.

Mr. Danh Hoang Anh's family in Hamlet 11 has nearly 500 square meters of garden land, and their main income comes from his job as a bricklayer and his wife's small grocery store. He and his wife are hard-working and diligent, but poverty has haunted them for many years. What worries his family the most is their dilapidated thatched house, which leaks everywhere and they have no money to repair or rebuild.

Implementing the Program to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses, the commune considered supporting his family with 60 million VND to build a house. From this support, he and his wife borrowed more from relatives to build a new house. More than a month ago, the spacious and neat house was completed to the joy of the whole family.

“Now that we have a new house, I no longer have to worry about getting a basin to catch water every time it rains heavily, and I feel more secure in my work. In the future, in addition to maintaining my job as a mason, my wife and I will expand our grocery store to increase our income and strive to escape poverty sustainably,” said Hoang Anh.

Not far away, Mr. Danh Dien Em's family has about 2 hectares of mixed garden land. Every day, he does many jobs for hire, and his wife weaves water hyacinth, but their income is unstable, so their life is always short. Understanding that situation, Luong Tam commune mobilized benefactors to support his family with 50 million VND to build a Great Unity house.

Mr. Danh Dien Em emotionally recalled the day the house was handed over: “The whole family was very happy because our long-standing dream of a new house had come true. Now my family is no longer considered a poor household. My wife and I will renovate the mixed garden and switch to raising eels to earn more income, determined not to fall back into poverty.”

According to the leader of Luong Tam commune, in 2025, poverty reduction work will be implemented synchronously in many aspects such as housing support, production loans, vocational training, job referrals... Particularly for house building, the commune carefully reviews each household, ensuring support for the right people, in the right circumstances. To date, the locality has supported the construction and repair of 73 houses in the Program to eliminate temporary houses, dilapidated houses and 9 Great Unity houses.

At the same time, the commune focuses on creating livelihoods for the people. Specifically, households with economic development needs are introduced to preferential loans from the Social Policy Bank; some households are trained in cultivation and livestock raising techniques suitable to their family conditions. The locality also pays attention to building collective economic models, production linkage groups, etc., contributing to supporting and helping people improve efficiency in agricultural production.

At the same time, propaganda is stepped up to raise the awareness of each family in economic development. Many households proactively learn techniques and boldly convert mixed garden land to implement effective farming and livestock models. Up to now, the commune has 112 households out of poverty, reaching 86.82% of the set target.

Mr. Tran Ngoc Thanh Thon, Head of the Economic Department of Luong Tam Commune, said that the commune will continue to pay attention to propaganda, helping to raise awareness and responsibility of all families, especially poor households, contributing to arousing the will to be self-reliant and self-reliant in economic development, striving to escape poverty steadily. On the other hand, there are policies to encourage enterprises and cooperatives to cooperate in production, business, product consumption, creating jobs for local people.

New houses are being built, business plans are being nurtured… all of these show positive changes in the lives of the people of Luong Tam. This is not only the result of social security policies but also the belief and motivation for people to strive to overcome difficulties and move towards a better life.
