“This year, natural disasters have been continuous. At the end of October, when the rice began to ripen, the sun was shining, and I was secretly happy and prayed for a favorable harvest. I didn’t expect that it would rain near the harvest day, causing almost all the heavy rice to become moldy and sprout,” said Mr. Ly Va Tong, in Huoi Dun village, sadly.

Mr. Ho Xia Nenh's family has about 0.3 hectares of ripe upland rice. They had to mobilize all the labor in the house to go to the fields to harvest quickly and build a hut to shelter from the rain, then divide the work to collect firewood to dry the rice. "Although we tried to dry the rice with firewood, because it was on a high mountain and the rain lasted for a long time, the rice still sprouted a lot, only a small amount could be saved" - Mr. Nenh said.
In a similar situation, Huoi Khe village has 11 households that lost their upland rice crop when more than 5 hectares of rice were harvested after a long period of rain. Mr. Ha Ba Ly, an official of the People's Committee of Huoi Tu commune, said that at the end of the year, people here have 2 upland rice crops, with 2 harvest times about 1 month apart. The current harvest is a late-ripening rice crop, and the long-lasting rain after the storm caused the rice seeds to sprout and sometimes grow green leaves, which can only be used to feed cattle and buffalo.

Huoi Tu commune has 13 villages with more than 1,000 households, mainly Mong people, living by cultivating upland rice for many generations. Every year, Huoi Tu people actively maintain agricultural production, gradually converting the structure of crops and livestock to areas with favorable and suitable conditions such as hybrid corn and hybrid rice, which has brought about practical results. In addition, people also maintain traditional upland sticky rice cultivation with a total area of about 117 hectares.
“Upland rice is the main source of food for the people. Therefore, in the face of unfavorable weather, the Commune People's Committee as well as the management boards of villages and hamlets are actively supporting and guiding people to save rice by covering and rolling the rice in a cool place and trying to dry it manually, making efforts to preserve food for the upcoming Tet holiday" - Mr. Ha Ba Ly said.
