Horrific shooting at birthday party, many casualties

Five people, including the suspect, were killed and three others were injured in a shooting at a poolside birthday party in a residential area in the US state of Kentucky early on July 6 (local time).

According to the local Police Department, three injured people were taken to a nearby hospital and are currently in critical condition.

Police arrived at the scene at just before 3 a.m. (0700 GMT) and as they approached they could still hear gunshots.

The suspect, described as a man, fled the scene in a vehicle before police arrived, leading police on a chase.

The suspect's car then crashed into a ditch and he shot himself. Partygoers recognized the suspect and reported his identity to the police.

The Kentucky shooting adds to a list of more than 100 mass shootings reported in the US this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive.

A mass shooting is defined as a shooting in which at least four people are shot, not including the shooter.
