The first African teams have secured their tickets to the 2026 World Cup. Morocco was the first team from the continent to qualify for the world's premier football tournament. Following last night's matches, another African representative has been confirmed: Tunisia.

Before the eighth matchday in Group H, Tunisia had a seven-point lead over second-placed Namibia (with three rounds remaining). Tunisia only faced a relatively weak opponent, Equatorial Guinea, away from home. A victory in this match would guarantee their qualification to the next round, regardless of Namibia's result.
Tunisia completed their mission by defeating Equatorial Guinea 1-0 thanks to a single goal from Ben Romdhane in the 90+4th minute.
Thus, Tunisia has 22 points after 8 matches, 10 points more than second-placed Namibia, having played one more game. Even if Namibia wins all three remaining matches, they will not be able to catch up with Tunisia's points total.
This is Tunisia's seventh appearance at the World Cup in history. In all six previous appearances (1978, 1998, 2002, 2006, 2018, 2022), the team failed to advance beyond the group stage.

In the 2026 World Cup finals, Africa has 9.5 slots (9 direct qualification spots and 1 spot through the Intercontinental Play-off). Given the current situation, Egypt, South Africa, and Algeria are likely to be the next teams from this continent to qualify for the 2026 World Cup.
Thus, as of now, FIFA has confirmed 18 teams that will participate in the 2026 World Cup: Canada, Mexico, USA (hosts), Australia, Iran, Japan, Jordan, South Korea, Uzbekistan (Asia), New Zealand (Oceania), Argentina, Brazil, Uruguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Paraguay (South America), and Morocco, Tunisia (Africa).
