Pangasius exports maintain growth momentum

DNVN - Vietnam's pangasius exports in March and in the first quarter of 2025 remained stable. However, in early April, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on most economies and adjusting them immediately afterwards. The current time - a 90-day tax deferral to temporarily ease trade conflicts - creates both opportunities and existing risks.

Vietnam Customs data shows that in March 2025, pangasius exports to markets continued to grow positively by 16%, reaching 182 million USD. Cumulative pangasius exports in the first quarter of 2025 reached more than 465 million USD, an increase of 13% over the same period in 2024.

The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) said that China and Hong Kong continue to affirm their position as Vietnam's number 1 pangasius consumption markets. Pangasius exports to China and Hong Kong in the last month of the first quarter of 2025 reached more than 38 million USD, up 4% compared to March 2024. The total export value of pangasius to this market in the first 3 months of this year reached more than 105 million USD, down 6% compared to the same period last year.

Meanwhile, although pangasius exports to the US in March 2025 decreased slightly by 4% compared to the same period last year, reaching more than 29 million USD, it still maintained its position as the second largest destination for Vietnamese pangasius exports. Total pangasius exports to the US in the first quarter of 2025 reached 69 million USD, up 6% compared to the first quarter of 2024.

Pangasius exports in the first quarter of 2025 will reach more than 465 million USD, an increase of 13% over the same period in 2024.

After the US, Brazil continues to demonstrate strong consumption of pangasius products from Vietnam, especially frozen pangasius fillets. In March 2025, pangasius exports to this South American country reached more than 20 million USD, nearly 1.5 times higher than in March 2024. In the first 3 months of this year, pangasius exports to Brazil reached more than 48 million USD, up 73% over the same period last year.

Pangasius exports to the EU also continued to enjoy positive growth of 16%, with a value of nearly 45 million USD in the first quarter of 2025. The Netherlands remains the largest importer of Vietnamese pangasius products in the EU. In the first three months of this year, pangasius exports to the Netherlands reached 12 million USD, up 11% over the same period last year.

VASEP assessed that, in general, Vietnam's pangasius exports in March and in the first quarter of 2025 to markets remained stable. However, in early April 2025, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing tariffs on most economies , and adjusted it immediately afterwards. At present, the 90-day tax deferral and trade conflict lull create both opportunities and existing risks.

According to VASEP, it is too difficult to predict the situation of Vietnam's seafood exports, including pangasius exports, in the near future, as trade policies under Mr. Trump always contain unexpected factors, can reverse overnight and create big shocks to the market. The pangasius export market is no exception.

Recently, General Secretary and President of China Xi Jinping visited Vietnam. Vietnam and China signed cooperation documents in various fields, including agricultural trade. At the same time, the two sides agreed to promote the role of the "Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement" (RCEP) and the ASEAN-China Free Trade Agreement (ACFTA) to promote bilateral trade in a balanced direction.

China and the US are both key markets for Vietnamese pangasius exports. Especially in the context of global trade fluctuations, any move from neighboring countries will more or less affect seafood exports, including pangasius.

VASEP believes that the position of Vietnamese pangasius in the international market has long been an important "link" in the world's seafood import-export cycle. American and Chinese consumers are somewhat familiar with the taste of Vietnamese pangasius. Therefore, pangasius exports are expected to continue to conquer markets with the best prices so that consumers can fully enjoy the taste of white-fleshed fish from Vietnam.
