On November 6, Cho Ray Hospital announced that it had successfully treated a patient whose hand had been severed. The accident occurred during a fight with a neighbor.
Accordingly, at around 11pm on October 16, Mr. PTC (40 years old, Dong Thap province) was transferred to the Emergency Department in a state of severe blood loss shock and multiple injuries. The patient had cuts on his chest and back, his left hand was completely severed, and his right hand was nearly severed.
Immediately, Cho Ray Hospital activated the red alert procedure, mobilizing doctors from the Emergency Department, Orthopedic Department, and Anesthesia and Resuscitation Department to coordinate the treatment. After receiving a blood transfusion and stabilizing the hemodynamics, the patient was transferred directly to the operating room.

According to Dr. Tran Phuoc Binh, Department of Orthopedics and Trauma, the surgery lasted 12 hours with 3 teams participating.
The first team performed initial treatment, cleaning, immobilizing the bones and preparing for microsurgery. By dawn, two microsurgery teams connected blood vessels, nerves and tendons to the two hands.
The treatment of the left hand was hampered by the fact that the hand was completely severed, the injury was complex, and the hemodynamic condition was unstable. At one point, the team had to reopen the incision to reconnect the blood vessels.
The surgery was completed at 1 p.m. the following day. After treatment and physical therapy, the patient was discharged, both hands “living” well.

According to doctors, in the event of an accident that results in a severed limb, the victim needs to have the wound stopped bleeding. The severed limb must be properly preserved with a clean bandage placed in a sealed plastic bag, then placed in a bucket of ice water (do not immerse directly). After that, quickly transfer the victim to the hospital for timely treatment.
