Pioneer in training and research in environmental science
In October 1995, according to the Decision of the Director of Hanoi National University, the Faculty of Environment was established. The departments of the University of Natural Sciences were merged into the Faculty: Environment, Geo-environment, and Soil. This is the first Faculty-level unit in the country assigned the task of training and researching environmental science at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, opening a new training field in the Vietnamese higher education system.
“In those difficult early years, generations of teachers of the Faculty and dedicated scientists laid the first bricks for the scientific, academic and cultural foundation of the Faculty”, Dr. Nguyen Xuan Huan, Head of the Faculty of Environment, University of Natural Sciences, recalled the history of the early days of its establishment. The project “Improving environmental management capacity in Vietnam” sponsored by the European Community and the Kingdom of Belgium helped the Faculty consolidate its facilities, build the Environmental Research and Documentation Center, train and improve the capacity of its teaching staff...
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Manh Cuong, Vice Rector of the University of Natural Sciences, the establishment of the Faculty of Environment in 1995 on the basis of predecessor units that existed in 1985 and 1992 demonstrated the early vision and strategy of the school in grasping the development trend of environmental science - a very new field at that time.

With the mission of being a training, research and knowledge transfer unit in the field of environment, the Faculty of Environment has continuously affirmed its pioneering role in the country in training high-quality human resources in the fields of environmental science, environmental engineering technology, food science and technology. In 30 years of establishment and development, the staff, lecturers and students of the Faculty have always linked scientific research activities with training, serving the community and actively contributing to policy making, solving environmental, health and food safety issues of the country.
The Faculty's persistent contributions have been recognized with many noble awards from the Party and the State, such as the Second and Third Class Labor Medals, Certificates of Merit, Emulation Flags from the Government and many other scientific awards.

The Faculty is promoting innovation in training programs, developing interdisciplinary research groups and digital transformation in management, training and research.

The training majors are Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering Technology, Food Science and Technology, Environment - Health - Safety, with standard, high-quality, engineering, and postgraduate programs. The Faculty is one of the leading units of the School and of Hanoi National University in program innovation, quality assessment according to AUN-QA standards and standards of the Ministry of Education and Training.
After 30 years of development, the Faculty has trained thousands of bachelors, about 1,500 masters and nearly 100 doctors. Many alumni now hold important positions in ministries, branches, localities, research institutes, universities, enterprises and international organizations.

“With its foundation, the Faculty is always steadfast in its educational philosophy: “Learning to apply, Learning from practice”, learning not only to know, but also to do; learning from the lecture hall, from the laboratory and from the very issues arising in economic and social life to make practical contributions to the community”, Dean Nguyen Xuan Huan shared.
The Faculty's staff have been chairing and participating in many programs and projects at the State, Ministry, Hanoi National University levels, and local and business cooperation tasks. Two key laboratories at the Vietnam National University, Hanoi (GreenLab and KLATEFOS), along with seven specialized laboratories and three strong research groups, are gradually forming an interdisciplinary scientific ecosystem, connecting research with practice, from laboratory to knowledge, connecting businesses and localities.
International cooperation activities continue to be expanded and deepened, with a network of partners on many continents, many students, trainees and postgraduates of the Faculty are able to participate in study, internship and research programs abroad, at the same time the Faculty also welcomes international students and scientists to work in Vietnam, contributing to improving the level of internationalization of the academic environment.
