The scholarship award ceremony in Gia Lai took place while many coastal communes and wards were heavily affected by storm Kalmaegi (storm number 13).

Specifically, more than 1,000 houses collapsed, more than 50,000 houses were damaged or had their roofs blown off; in addition, boats, cages, rice, and crops were also severely damaged. Gia Lai province estimated the storm damage at nearly 6,000 billion VND.

"Don't let circumstances take away your dreams"

Ms. Pham Thi Thao Linh, member of the Editorial Board of Tuoi Tre newspaper, shared that the scholarships are the newspaper's efforts to prevent students from having to drop out of school due to difficult circumstances.

In this program, many students are truly good examples of studiousness, because even though their families are very poor, their circumstances are extremely difficult, and they have to work to support their families from a very young age, they still try their best to stay in school and in class. Some students who received scholarships have houses that have just collapsed or been damaged in the storm.

"With 30 years of persistent implementation of the For the Future of Vietnam scholarship program, tens of thousands of scholarships have reached students in provinces and cities across the country.

The organizers hope that today's scholarship will give you confidence and opportunities, so that no matter how difficult your circumstances are, you can still stand firm on the path to knowledge," Ms. Linh said.

At the award ceremony, Ngo Thien, a 9A2 student at Nhon Hoi Secondary School, Quy Nhon Dong Ward, made the audience admire his optimistic spirit in the face of adversity. The hut where Thien and her mother lived was blown away by the storm, but instead of being sad, Thien was very optimistic, saying that it was just a test in his life.
