On the evening of November 2 (Vietnam time), India successfully launched its heaviest communications satellite ever, marking a new step forward in the country's ambitious space program.
The CMS-03 satellite, weighing about 4,400 kg, was launched into orbit from Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh state, by a 43.5-meter-tall LVM3-M5 rocket - an upgraded version of the rocket that landed an unmanned spacecraft on the Moon in August 2023. The Indian Navy said the satellite will enhance the security of communication channels between ships, aircraft and submarines.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed pride in India's space industry and stressed the ambition to send Indian astronauts to the Moon by 2040, following previous successes only belonging to Russia, the US and China.
Over the past decade, India has steadily expanded its space programme, with Shubhanshu Shukla becoming the country's second astronaut and the first Indian to travel to the International Space Station (ISS), paving the way for a manned mission scheduled for 2027./.
