Specifically, for two years from 2020 to 2022, the 9-year-old boy was left living alone in his family's apartment in the town of Nersac, Charente region (France). The boy seemed to survive on cakes, canned food and stolen tomatoes.

The boy’s mother lived with her partner in another apartment 5km away and only visited the child occasionally. It was only after the mother asked social services to help buy food due to financial difficulties that the case of the boy being abandoned to live alone gradually came to light.
The child often had no hot water or heating, said Barbara Couturier, mayor of Nersac. However, during the time he was abandoned, he continued to go to school and was a good student.
"I met the boy's mother in May 2022, she told us that she was having financial problems so we gave her four food vouchers. But instead of buying food, she bought some processed food so that made me suspicious. Moreover, some residents told me that there was a child living alone. Connecting these two stories, I reported the case to the local police and the national police," said Ms. Couturier.
The child has been in the care of social services since September 19, 2022, Ms. Couturier said.
