On September 19, a representative of Saigon General Hospital (HCMC) said that doctors there had just successfully performed surgery on a case of a foreign object deeply embedded in the leg many days after an accident.
Previously, on the morning of May 28, while passing through Cay Go roundabout (HCMC) on his way to his tutor's house, Mr. D.TP (45 years old, residing in Nha Be commune, HCMC) suddenly collided with a car door that had just opened on the road.
The impact caused his right foot to be injured and swollen. The patient was taken to a nearby medical facility for first aid, bandaged, and then sent home. However, the wound on the instep of the teacher's right foot became more and more serious, red, swollen, pus-filled, oozing, and accompanied by persistent pain.

With almost no mobility, the patient was forced to stop tutoring, losing all income and his life turned upside down. During this time, Mr. P. bought his own medicine and changed his wound dressing at home, but his condition did not improve.
“I thought it was just a soft tissue injury, taking medicine and changing bandages would gradually heal. But for more than 2 months, my foot got worse and worse, leaving me exhausted,” teacher P. shared about the difficult time he had just gone through.
On August 20, unable to bear it any longer, Mr. P. went to Saigon General Hospital (Ben Thanh Ward, Ho Chi Minh City) for help. At the Orthopedic Trauma - Burn Department, doctors examined, took X-rays and discovered a foreign object deep in the instep of the patient's right foot, and ordered immediate surgery.

Dr. Tran Hoa, Head of the Department of Orthopedics and Burns, said that when the patient arrived, the treatment team noticed that the infected wound was taking a long time to heal, so they immediately thought of the possibility of a foreign object.
After surgery, they removed a piece of hard plastic measuring 1x0.8cm. This was the reason why the wound did not heal for a long time. Just 5 days after surgery, the patient's wound was dry, the swelling had reduced, he could walk and was expected to be discharged soon.

From this case, Dr. Tran Hoa recommends that patients with injuries that are slow to heal, swollen, red, and painful should immediately go to a higher-level medical facility for examination and accurate diagnosis.
"Patients should absolutely not change bandages, self-treat at home or buy medicine, because this can make the condition worse, cause prolonged infection, and even endanger life.
Like the case of Mr. P., with a seemingly simple wound that lasted for more than 2 months, not only affected his health but also turned his life upside down," the doctor warned.
Since June 18, Gia Dinh People's Hospital has provided comprehensive support to Saigon General Hospital, to help people more conveniently access quality medical services right in the city center, in the context of preparing to implement the Decision of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee on merging the two hospitals above.
According to the roadmap, after the merger, Saigon General Hospital will become the second facility of Gia Dinh People's Hospital, with the orientation of developing into a general hospital specializing in emergency care, contributing to reducing the load on the main facility and meeting the increasing emergency needs of the city's residents as well as international tourists.
