Cambodian girl makes remarkable recovery from severe brain injury

Medical staff are caring for and treating sick children.

Previously, while driving an electric bicycle, the child was involved in a serious traffic accident. The collision left him in a deep coma, severely damaging many organs: a broken left collarbone, a collapsed lung, liver and kidney injuries, and especially a severe traumatic brain injury.

During the 10 days of treatment in Cambodia, the baby was ventilated via endotracheal tube, fed through a nasogastric tube, given blood transfusions and intensive care. Although he had passed the critical stage, the hope of recovery seemed far-fetched. The family had no choice but to bring him to Vietnam to seek a chance of recovery at City International Hospital.

Here, upon receiving the patient, the team of doctors at the Pediatrics Department immediately determined that this was an extremely serious case. The central nervous system was severely damaged, the liver and kidneys had not recovered, muscle strength was reduced, and reflexes were weak. The child had almost completely lost the ability to communicate and move, and was completely dependent on medical care.

Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Cam, Department of Pediatrics, City International Hospital, said that doctors not only treat organ damage, but also have to activate each vital ability of the child - from active breathing, swallowing reflex, alertness, to emotions, perception... The treatment regimen is implemented comprehensively: intravenous nutrition with personalized nutrition, treatment of pressure ulcers, infection control, combined with daily physical therapy to maintain respiratory function and restart central nervous system activity.

“10 days after being admitted to the hospital, the baby began to react to surrounding stimuli: his eyes moved, his hands trembled slightly. Each day that passed, he made a small step forward: he could eat a few spoonfuls of milk, keep breathing naturally, make a few discrete sounds… The process of improving his general condition changed significantly,” informed Dr. Nguyen Thi Hong Cam.

The patient has now been discharged from the hospital and returned to Cambodia and continues to practice physical therapy at home, monitor neurological indicators, and gradually practice movement and communication.
