Rescue Russian boy in critical accident in Vietnam

On May 10, a representative of the City Children's Hospital (HCMC) said that recently, doctors here had a special journey to save a foreign boy.

Previously, one day in April, a boy named SM (11 years old, Russian nationality), was traveling with his family in Nha Trang when he unfortunately had a serious accident.

Specifically, the child was involved in a traffic accident that caused extensive skin lacerations in a series of locations such as the left shoulder, arm, wrist, left pelvis, thigh, leg and ankle. After the accident, the child was taken to a local hospital for wound care, skin grafting and antibiotic treatment for several days.

However, the patient's condition did not improve, the wound worsened so he was transferred to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

At the City Children's Hospital, doctors noted that the wound infection on the child's left arm and left leg was quite severe, with the skin peeling off the entire left leg, arm, thigh, and lower leg. The child had a continuous fever of 39-40 degrees, difficulty breathing, a rapid heart rate, the wound had a very unpleasant odor, and a lot of pus.

Doctors quickly consulted and performed emergency surgery to clean the wound and gave the patient antibiotics. Initial wound pus and blood cultures showed that the patient was infected with gram-negative bacilli.

Specialist Doctor 2 Nguyen Minh Tien, Deputy Director of the City Children's Hospital, said that the child patient was placed on a continuous negative pressure wound cleaning system (VAC) and used biological gauze and advanced antiseptic solution.

At the same time, the baby was treated with intravenous feeding, protein solution infusion, electrolyte adjustment, acid-base imbalance, and pain relief. The baby was also consulted by specialists in Nutrition, Psychology, Rehabilitation, etc. and received support from language experts.

Thanks to the medical team's best efforts, after 10 days of treatment in Ho Chi Minh City, the baby is awake, responsive, has a clear pulse, dry wounds, stable vital signs, and is in much better spirits thanks to the support of psychological therapy.

Not only a medical success

Although the hospital has covered part of the child's medical expenses, the family has expressed their desire to bring the child back to Russia due to the need for long-term treatment of the wound.

At this time, the hospital and the family contacted the Russian Embassy in Vietnam. The doctors fulfilled all administrative procedures even on holidays, to coordinate and develop the safest transportation plan for the baby.

Online consultations between doctors from both countries were held to exchange treatment records, prognosis and special medical transport procedures. When it comes to saving a small life, there is no language or geographical gap between them.

On the morning of April 24, the parties officially coordinated to bring baby M. back to the country by plane. The entire process of transporting the patient was carried out in accordance with international standards, under the close supervision of doctors from both countries and with special support from the Russian Embassy.

Finally, the baby was taken to the plane in stable condition, ready to begin the next stage of treatment in his home country.

According to doctors, the challenge with this case lies not only in medical techniques, but also in language, culture, and the psychology of the patient and family, as all are foreigners and do not speak Vietnamese.

Throughout the treatment process, the Vietnamese medical team closely accompanied the family, from interpreting, providing psychological support to explaining each treatment step in a friendly and careful language, demonstrating the ability to access international treatment standards.

"This event is not only a testament to a successful medical treatment but also has profound significance in terms of foreign affairs. In the context of globalization, medicine is not only a field of saving people but also a spiritual bridge between countries," said a representative of the City Children's Hospital.
