Giant tumor discovered after 3 weeks of persistent abdominal pain.
Approximately three weeks prior to hospitalization, the child experienced dull, unexplained abdominal pain. The pain gradually worsened over time, accompanied by unusually rapid abdominal distension. Concerned about their child's condition, the family took the child to Cua Dong General Hospital for examination.
Through examination and paraclinical tests such as abdominal ultrasound and CT scan of the uterus and ovaries, doctors discovered an extremely large tumor in the right ovary, occupying almost the entire abdominal cavity of the child.

The surgery was successful, preserving the child's reproductive function.
After conducting interdisciplinary consultations and consulting with experts at the central level, the surgical team of the Department of Surgery decided to perform emergency surgical intervention to remove the tumor while preserving as much of the remaining reproductive organs as possible.
The surgery was performed safely. The tumor was completely dissected and removed intact from the body. During the operation, the doctors preserved the uterus and left ovary, helping to maintain the child's reproductive and endocrine functions. A portion of the tumor tissue was sent for histopathological examination (biopsy) to determine the cellular nature.

Ovarian germ cell carcinoma - a rare but dangerous disease.
According to doctors, ovarian germ cell tumors are a rare type of tumor, usually appearing in adolescents and young women. This tumor arises from germ cells – cells capable of developing into oocytes in the ovaries.

In the early stages, the disease often develops silently, without obvious symptoms. If left undetected and untreated, the tumor can:
- Rapid increase in size, compressing neighboring organs.
- Ovarian torsion can cause necrosis and affect fertility.
- Tumor rupture can cause peritonitis, even threatening the patient's life.
Doctor's advice
Dr. Thai Doan Cong, MD, PhD, Deputy Director of Cua Dong General Hospital and Head of the Surgery Department, recommends that parents pay more attention to the reproductive health of their teenagers, especially when they exhibit the following abnormal signs: prolonged abdominal pain, particularly in the lower abdomen; unusual and rapid abdominal distension without a clear cause; menstrual disorders (irregular cycles, abnormal bleeding, etc.); fatigue; and unexplained weight loss.
Taking children to reputable medical facilities for early detection and timely treatment is a key factor in preserving reproductive function and avoiding dangerous complications caused by ovarian tumors.
