Nam Thang Long Hospital recently admitted a 13-year-old male patient (residing in Hanoi ) with severe epigastric pain that spread throughout the abdomen. Doctors determined that the child had generalized peritonitis due to a perforated gastric-duodenal ulcer and immediately ordered emergency surgery.
During the laparoscopic surgery, the surgical team discovered a 3mm hole in the anterior duodenum, with digestive juices leaking into the abdominal cavity, causing peritonitis. The patient had the hole sutured, the abdominal cavity drained, and is now fully recovered, with no post-operative complications recorded.

Duodenal perforation in pediatric patients.
According to Dr. Nguyen Hong Nam, Head of the General Surgery Department (Nam Thang Long Hospital), who directly performed the surgery, perforated duodenal ulcers are a serious complication that often occurs in adults, especially those who use alcohol or have long-term underlying diseases. However, recent reality shows that minors are increasingly facing higher risks.
The main causes come from irregular eating habits, skipping breakfast, eating a lot of spicy, fried foods; stress from studying, pressure from grades; overuse of painkillers, non-prescription anti-inflammatory drugs; use of carbonated drinks, fast food and sleeping late. If not detected early, the disease can cause dangerous complications such as gastrointestinal bleeding, perforation of the stomach - duodenum.
Nam Thang Long Hospital recommends that parents and students maintain a healthy lifestyle, eat in moderation; limit fast food and carbonated soft drinks; do not arbitrarily use painkillers or anti-inflammatory drugs; ensure adequate sleep and reduce school stress. When children show signs of prolonged abdominal pain, bloating, heartburn, vomiting or unusual weight loss, they should be taken to the doctor soon.
The case of a 13-year-old boy once again reminds us that: gastroduodenal disease is no longer an adult disease, and changing lifestyle habits is the key to preventing dangerous complications.
