Recently, doctors at Bai Chay Hospital ( Quang Ninh ) successfully performed surgery to treat a young man with a large, "malignant" thyroid tumor that had invaded and metastasized to the cervical lymph nodes. Notably, the patient had previously been diagnosed with a benign thyroid tumor but neglected to have regular check-ups.
Accordingly, two years ago, Mr. C. (31 years old, residing in Bong Lai ward, Bac Ninh province) discovered a thyroid tumor. He then went for a check-up at a higher-level hospital where he was diagnosed with a benign tumor and scheduled for regular check-ups. However, due to negligence and neglecting to get checked for the past two years, Mr. C. recently noticed a rapidly growing tumor in his neck, along with swollen lymph nodes causing discomfort and a feeling of tightness, so he went to Bai Chay Hospital for examination.

The surgical team from the Oncology Department 2, Bai Chay Hospital, performed thyroidectomy surgery on a patient.
Ultrasound and CT scan results revealed a mass measuring 77x48mm in the right lobe of the patient's thyroid gland, along with abnormal lymph nodes in the neck (the largest measuring 26x18mm). A fine-needle biopsy suggested papillary thyroid carcinoma with lymph node metastasis, and the patient was scheduled for surgery.
The surgical team, led by Dr. Doan Chien Thang, Specialist Level I – Department of Oncology 2, Bai Chay Hospital, performed a thyroidectomy on the patient. During the surgery, the team encountered a relatively complex and difficult tumor dissection due to its firmness, large size (7x10cm), invasion of muscle, esophagus, right recurrent laryngeal nerve, and numerous large lymph nodes in the central space (group VI) and along both carotid grooves.
After nearly 3 hours of surgery, the doctors used a Ligasure scalpel to assist in hemostasis and optimal dissection, successfully removing the entire thyroid gland and performing bilateral jugular lymph node dissection. Five days after surgery, the patient recovered well, the surgical wound healed quickly, the patient communicated well, and was discharged from the hospital.

Following the surgery, the young man's health recovered well and he has now been discharged from the hospital.
According to Dr. Doan Chien Thang, Specialist in Oncology 2, Bai Chay Hospital, patient C.'s thyroid tumor was assessed as particularly dangerous due to its large size, invasion of the neck muscles and esophagus, and tight adhesion to the recurrent laryngeal nerve, making surgery complicated and increasing the risk of complications (such as vocal cord paralysis, postoperative hypoparathyroidism, bleeding, and tracheal collapse). Without timely surgical treatment, the patient would face the risk of permanent hoarseness, airway obstruction, deep tumor invasion into the trachea and esophagus causing difficulty swallowing, and the risk of hemorrhage or distant metastasis (lungs, bones, etc.).
Doctors at Bai Chay Hospital advise that patients diagnosed with thyroid tumors or nodules should have regular check-ups every six months to monitor for abnormalities. People should have regular health check-ups every six months, including regular cancer screenings and thyroid ultrasounds.
If you experience symptoms such as discomfort in the neck, difficulty swallowing, hoarseness, persistent cough, or a lump in the neck, you should immediately visit a specialized endocrinology clinic for clinical examination and necessary tests for screening and early detection.
