Accused of illegal tutoring, high school affirms "teaching but not charging money"

Recently, reflecting to Dan Tri newspaper, a source (who asked to remain anonymous) repeatedly said that Binh Giang High School (Binh Giang commune, Hai Phong city) organized extra classes for 12th grade students and collected money, which is a violation of the regulations in Circular 29 of the Ministry of Education and Training .

The source continued to report that Binh Giang High School has been organizing extra classes for 12th grade students for 8 weeks and collecting 2 million VND/student.

"Every afternoon from Monday to Saturday, there are 6 to 8 classes of grade 12 students taking extra classes at the school and the school directly collects money from 30,000 VND to 45,000 VND per 90-minute class," the source reported.

Regarding the above content, the reporter contacted the Department of Education and Training of Hai Phong City, then worked with the Board of Directors of Binh Giang High School.

At the meeting, Mr. Pham Dinh Hiep, Vice Principal of Binh Giang High School, said that after the new school year started, the school held a meeting with parents of 12th grade students about organizing extra classes.

Based on the consensus of parents, students and teachers on extra classes, the school has organized extra classes for 12th graders. This extra class has started from around September 20th until now.

"The meeting agreed to organize extra teaching and learning with the signatures of parents, students and teachers, completely on a voluntary basis," Mr. Hiep affirmed.

According to Mr. Hiep, this year’s grade 12 has 347 students in 8 classes. Not all of them register for extra classes; students who want to can write an application to choose the appropriate subjects to participate in.

“The school does not collect any money as reported. Salaries for extra tutoring teachers are paid from the city budget and disbursed at the end of the school year,” Mr. Hiep affirmed.
