Disadvantages of early admission
Speaking to Tien Phong reporters, leaders of some universities noticed the shortcomings of early admission. Associate Professor, Dr. Le Thanh Bac - Vice Director of Danang University assessed that most students who were admitted early did not focus all their abilities on the high school graduation exam. Most of them only needed to pass the graduation exam. The difficulty of schools that admit early, according to Mr. Bac, is that the virtual rate is up to 300%. When admitting early, data on priority areas and priority subjects are not yet available, so post-auditing discovered many errors, even cases of passing turned into failing. From there, Mr. Bac proposed that from 2025, the Ministry should have a regulation that admission can only be announced after students complete the high school graduation exam.

Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Huu Cong, Vice Director of Thai Nguyen University, shared that the advantage of early admission is to help students feel secure, but "sometimes it leads to being too secure". On the other hand, universities also have difficulty predicting the virtual rate. This Vice Director proposed that from 2025, the early admission method should be reconsidered. He recommended that this option should be limited and should only be reserved for specific majors.
Although recognizing the difficulties and shortcomings, schools still have to participate in the common race. Because if they fall out of the race, they may not be able to recruit enough students to train.
At the conference summarizing the high school graduation exam for the period 2020-2024 recently held by the Ministry of Education and Training, Prof. Dr. Huynh Van Chuong - Director of the Department of Quality Management, Ministry of Education and Training proposed that the announcement of early admission results should be after the end of the program and school year plan (after May 31). The benchmark scores for early admission methods should be announced after this time to avoid affecting the high school graduation exam and students' learning.
Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Duy Hai, Head of the Admissions and Career Guidance Department (Hanoi University of Science and Technology) affirmed that up to now, the school's early admission methods have been implemented after candidates have completed the general education program. "If this regulation is implemented, it will only affect schools that have used the method of considering transcripts of grades 10, 11 and the first semester of grade 12," said Mr. Hai. Similarly, Dr. Nguyen Quoc Trinh, Head of the Training Department (University of Transport Technology) said that the school's annual transcript review method, the first round usually considers 5 semesters, the second round considers all 6 semesters, but if the Ministry issues regulations, the school is ready to comply to ensure the common goals of the industry.
Strengthening private exam supervision
According to statistics from the Ministry of Education and Training, in the past, universities used more than 20 admission methods. Most of them are early admission methods such as transcripts, foreign language certificates, international competency assessment certificates (SAT, ACT), competency assessment test results of 2 National Universities, combined admission, interviews, etc. In 2025, it is forecasted that there will be more than 10 separate entrance exams organized by universities and colleges. In particular, the competency assessment test of 2 National Universities and the thinking assessment test of Hanoi University of Science and Technology are used by many schools for admission.
Professor Huynh Van Chuong suggested that when using high school graduation exam scores for admission, universities need to ensure fairness if using many subject combinations to consider admission to the same major.
In reality, there is a significant difference in the score distribution between the combinations from the high school graduation exam. In particular, the scores of the social science combinations are higher than the scores of the natural science combinations. However, when considering admission, in one major, there are schools that use both the social science and natural science combinations and have the same standard score, causing a number of candidates to be disadvantaged.
Not only that, the fact that schools use many early admission methods causes the quota for admission based on the score of the high school graduation exam to be narrowed, many candidates with high exam scores still fail to pass their favorite wishes, creating a negative social psychology for thousands of candidates and parents. For example, this year, there are majors where candidates scored 9.5 points/subject in the C00 group (Literature, History, Geography) but still failed the majors of Literature Pedagogy, History Pedagogy, Hanoi National University of Education (standard score 29.3, equivalent to 9.77 points/subject).
“Therefore, the Ministry will issue specific regulations on state management for the capacity assessment and thinking assessment exams organized by universities in the admission regulations to ensure the quality of the exams can be checked and monitored,” said Mr. Chuong. At the same time, he requested that the process of building a question bank and the exam questions of these exams must not exceed the 2018 General Education Program so that students do not have to review for separate exams, which can disrupt teaching and learning in high schools. The exam organization process must ensure uniform safety and avoid many forms that make it difficult for students to review for the exam; currently, each school is using its own form of exam. For example, the capacity assessment exam of Hanoi National University is organized on computers, but that of Ho Chi Minh City National University is organized on paper...
Deputy Minister of Education and Training Hoang Minh Son said that early admission has positive aspects but also distracts students. Recently, many departments of education and training and high schools have reported and worried about this, because many students neglect their studies when they know they have been admitted early.
