The conflict in Sudan has led to the most serious civilian protection crisis in decades, with more than 3 million people forced to flee to neighboring countries in search of safety, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR).
Speaking at a press conference in Geneva on November 9, Ms. Dominique Hyde - Director of External Relations of UNHCR said that the migration wave from Sudan is at an unprecedented high since the conflict broke out.
In October alone, 60,000 Sudanese arrived in Chad due to fighting in Darfur. According to statistics, 71% of refugees arriving in Chad said they had suffered human rights violations in Sudan while fleeing.
Even though they have reached relative safety, many families are still traumatized after witnessing the horrific scenes.
Chad is currently hosting more than 700,000 Sudanese refugees, mostly women and children – the largest refugee influx in Chad's history.
According to the latest figures from the Egyptian government , the country hosts the most Sudanese refugees, hosting 1.2 million people.
Sudan has been devastated by a conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) that broke out in mid-April 2023. The SAF is headed by General Abdel Fattah Al-Burhan and the RSF is commanded by Mr. Al-Burhan's former deputy, Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo.
Both sides have been accused of war crimes, including targeting civilians. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), the fighting has left around 20,000 people dead, thousands injured and millions displaced and seeking refuge in neighboring countries.
"We have never seen numbers like this in a generation," Ted Chaiban, deputy executive director of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), recently said, referring to the millions of people displaced, as well as the 8.5 million people facing emergency levels of food insecurity, while 775,000 are on the brink of famine.
