On December 5th, the People's Committee of Luong Son District and the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hoa Binh Province jointly organized a ceremony to export the first shipment of Dien pomelos to the US market.
Dien pomelos grown in Hoa Binh province are being exported to the US for the first time.
The first shipment of Dien pomelos from Hoa Binh province exported to the US, totaling 16 tons, was purchased by RYB Joint Stock Company from My Tan Agricultural Cooperative and Dai Thanh Agricultural Service Cooperative in Cao Duong and Thanh Son communes.
This batch of Dien pomelos has been sampled and tested, and all meet the technical requirements and food safety standards of the importing country. After harvesting, the pomelos have been processed, treated, packaged, and are awaiting export procedures.
The 'technological secret' to preserving pomelos for 4 months while keeping them fresh and delicious.
According to Mr. Dinh Cong Su, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoa Binh province, this is the second year that Hoa Binh province has exported locally grown Dien pomelos. Previously, in December 2022, Hoa Binh had a shipment of Dien pomelos purchased by a business and exported to the UK.
This year, the export market for Dien pomelos continues to expand with additional contracts for export to the EU, and notably, three orders for export to the US.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Hoa Binh province, Dien pomelo trees have been planted in Luong Son district since 1980, and the total area has now reached 800 hectares, accounting for over 35% of the total fruit tree area in the district. The annual production of Dien pomelos is over 12,000 tons.
Currently, Luong Son district has 51.06 hectares with an estimated production of over 700 tons, where a production and consumption chain has been established and developed. Three grapefruit growing areas have been granted domestic and export-oriented growing area codes.
According to Mr. Nguyen Manh Hieu, Head of the Agricultural Product Preservation Technology Department (VIAEP), Vietnam has now developed technology for processing pomelos for export. Accordingly, fresh pomelos can be preserved for 4 months while maintaining their firm, glossy peel, original color, and juicy, fresh segments.
"This preservation technology allows Vietnamese pomelos to be exported in large quantities by sea to distant markets such as the US and EU at a lower cost, thus enhancing their competitiveness," Mr. Hieu said.
