From September 21-24, President Luong Cuong and his wife will attend the high-level meeting of the 80th United Nations General Assembly, combined with bilateral activities in the US. Deputy Foreign Minister Dang Hoang Giang informed about the working trip, its significance and main activities.
The President 's working trip coincides with the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations and the 80th National Day of Vietnam.
"Through the visit, Vietnam conveyed the message of affirming its role as a responsible member of the UN, proactively participating and making positive and substantial contributions to the activities and major priorities of the UN and the international community, at a time when the UN needs and expects support and companionship in words and actions from key active countries like Vietnam," said Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang.

The President will meet and contact many leaders of countries and partners to maintain and promote in-depth and effective relations with other countries, as well as mobilize cooperation and support from the UN, countries and important partners for major priorities.
Vietnam has undertaken important international responsibilities such as organizing the signing ceremony of the UN Convention against Cybercrime in Hanoi on October 25, preparing to assume the role of Chair of the 11th Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons in 2026, and running for a number of important UN positions.
The President will attend a high-level meeting commemorating the 80th anniversary of the founding of the United Nations, deliver keynote speeches at the General Assembly's high-level debate and a special global summit on climate action.
Over the past 50 years, the cooperative relationship between Vietnam and the United Nations has become a strong partnership. The United Nations has always accompanied and provided valuable support to Vietnam, from the period of rebuilding the country after the war, breaking the embargo and gradually integrating more deeply into the international community.
Meanwhile, Vietnam is increasingly proactive and active, making increasingly substantial and profound contributions in terms of ideas, concrete actions, human resources, and resources in all areas of operation and important priorities of the UN...
In recent years, Vietnam has held many important positions at leading UN agencies on peace, security, law, ensuring the promotion of human rights and culture.
The Deputy Minister said that in the context of multilateralism and the UN facing many challenges, Vietnam is expected to be an active partner promoting multilateral cooperation with the UN, playing a central role, and being considered a model for effective cooperation with the UN.
On the bilateral front, the Deputy Foreign Minister said that the President's visit took place on the occasion of Vietnam and the US celebrating the 30th anniversary of diplomatic relations, an opportunity for the two countries to look back on their three-decade journey from former enemies to Comprehensive Strategic Partnership...
It is expected that the two sides will continue to uphold the fundamental principles of the relationship, including respect for the UN Charter, international law, and respect for each other's political institutions, independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity. In addition, the two countries will further strengthen political trust and strategic trust, and mutually beneficial cooperation, bringing practical benefits.

The activities affirm the policy of attaching importance to developing relations with the US, especially in economics, trade, investment, science and technology; promoting the implementation of agreements and commitments between high-ranking leaders of the two countries; gaining support from all sectors for Vietnam and the Vietnam-US relationship, demonstrating the Party and State's concern for the Vietnamese community in the US.
Deputy Minister Dang Hoang Giang affirmed that after 30 years of establishing diplomatic relations and 2 years of implementing the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, Vietnam and the US have achieved many great strides, making the relationship between the two countries a model of efforts to heal, overcome the past, and move towards the future.
With persistent efforts from both politicians and people of the two countries, Vietnam - US relations have continuously developed and recorded many impressive results.
The Deputy Minister mentioned the working trip (to attend the 79th UN General Assembly and the Future Summit) of General Secretary and President To Lam in September 2024 and four phone calls between the leaders of the two countries from September 2024 to present.
In exchanges and contacts, the US side increasingly appreciates the position and attaches importance to the relationship with Vietnam, reaffirming its commitment to supporting a "strong, independent, self-reliant and prosperous" Vietnam.
The two sides are continuing to make efforts to promote economic, trade and investment relations to develop effectively and sustainably, and to properly handle the issue of reciprocal taxes. The US is Vietnam's largest export market. Two-way trade turnover has exceeded the 100 billion USD mark.
The two sides are also promoting investment and technology cooperation, especially in future fields such as semiconductors and artificial intelligence. Defense and security cooperation continues to develop, especially in overcoming the consequences of war and has achieved many positive developments. Projects on dioxin treatment and support for people with disabilities are given priority.
Internationally, Vietnam and the US closely coordinate at regional and international forums, especially ASEAN mechanisms and the UN Security Council, in responding to global challenges.
