On January 17, the foreign ministers and heads of delegations from 10 Latin American countries issued a joint statement expressing deep concern over US President-elect Donald Trump's plan to deport migrants en masse.

The online and in-person meeting was attended by diplomatic representatives from Colombia, Cuba, Guatemala, Haiti, Venezuela, Belize, Brazil, El Salvador, Honduras, and the host country, Mexico.

The joint statement emphasized that mass deportations of migrants are incompatible with fundamental human rights principles and do not effectively address the root causes of migration. Representatives from the countries called on all nations in the region to act in accordance with domestic and international law, respect human rights, and adopt a humane approach to managing migration.

Furthermore, the 14-point Declaration emphasizes that all migrants, regardless of their migration status, have fundamental and inalienable rights, and that all states have an obligation to respect and protect these rights and to seek ways to fully realize them.

In the statement, the 10 Latin American countries also agreed to cooperate in addressing this issue at a meeting held on the same day in Mexico City.

The document addresses the rejection of criminalization during migration phases and prioritizes protecting this group from transnational organized crime. Representatives from 10 countries also proposed launching meetings of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) on migration to discuss solutions to the issue in greater detail.
