Just one year after the two expressways opened, tourism in Tuy Phong has experienced an unexpected boom. Besides the traditional destinations of Co Thach Pagoda and Binh Thanh moss beach, the Cu Lao Cau (Hon Cau) island tour and the Phan Dung - Ta Nang trekking route are new and very attractive to young people who love to explore. Many local young people have quickly caught up with the trend, creating programs to bring tourists from Ho Chi Minh City, Dong Nai, Binh Duong , etc., to the island, offering unique experiences not found anywhere else.
I've visited Hon Cau Island in Phuoc The commune, Tuy Phong district, many times, but never had the chance to stay overnight because the border guards didn't allow tourists to stay there due to security concerns and a lack of proper infrastructure and accommodation. In the past year, day trips or overnight stays to Hon Cau have been widely advertised, attracting young people who enjoy exploring and discovering new places. This island, only 1.5 km long and covering about 140 hectares, is completely isolated from the mainland and is described by tourists as a "green paradise" because of its stunningly beautiful and unspoiled scenery.
An Vu, a young man from Phan Ri Cua town who specializes in taking tourists to Hon Cau Island, said: “After Tet (Lunar New Year), many families and young people from within and outside the province have registered for tours to Hon Cau Island. Especially in April and May, when the weather is calm, it is predicted that island tourism will be even busier. If tourists want to stay overnight, tour operators will register with the border guard force to manage security and order during their stay on the island. We also remind tourists to limit the use of plastic bags and other plastic items… if they bring them, they should not litter and should clean up all areas on the island before leaving.”
It only takes about 30-40 minutes if you depart from Phuoc The or Lien Huong port to reach this beautiful small island with its turquoise waters, captivating nature lovers. According to local experience, the period from January to June (lunar calendar) is the ideal time for tourists to visit the island because the weather is calm and favorable, perfect for children to explore and immerse themselves in nature. Besides interesting check-in points that everyone visiting the island should see at least once, such as Yen Cave, Ba Hon Cave, Gia Long Well, the temple of the God of the South Sea, and the stunning beaches and coral reefs, the Sea Turtle Conservation Area is also a popular destination. When visiting the Sea Turtle Conservation Area, tourists will hear presentations about the habits of sea turtles and essential sea turtle rescue skills. This will raise awareness of environmental protection and the preservation of the habitat for surrounding animals.
Ms. Ngoc Yen, a tourist from Ho Chi Minh City who has experienced this place, shared: “What's special about Cu Lao Cau is that the island still retains its pristine natural beauty, untouched by commercial services catering to visitors. Besides small hotels with relatively high costs and the possibility of power outages in the middle of the night because locals use solar power, most tourists prefer to stay overnight by camping, sleeping in tents, and enjoying the nature and the cool coastal air.”
Perhaps camping overnight on the island is one of the most enjoyable experiences you can have in Cu Lao Cau. You'll be immersed in nature, sitting under the sun and having a small barbecue on the beach, especially during the full moon, when the scenery becomes even more poetic and romantic. The tour operator will prepare dinner for you with fresh seafood, or you can bring your own corn and potatoes to roast over a crackling campfire. You can also sing, dance, and play group games together… it will surely be incredibly fun. After having fun, in the evening, you can lie down and gaze at the vast sky with thousands of twinkling stars, listen to the gentle sound of the waves and the wind, and enjoy the beautiful natural scenery of the island. The next morning, you can wake up to watch the sunrise, immerse yourself in the clear blue water, snorkel to see the bottom, paddle around the island with SUPs, and admire the amazing nature of this place…
You definitely have to visit Hon Cau and stay overnight to experience it!
Hon Cau Island is one of Vietnam's 16 Marine Protected Areas, renowned not only for its beautiful natural landscape but also for its high biodiversity, showcasing a diverse range of aquatic organisms, benthic animals, seaweed, seagrass, coral, fish, invertebrates, mammals, birds, reptiles, sea turtles, etc. Researchers consider Hon Cau Island to be of paramount importance, a vast fishing ground for Vietnam. In July 2023, the Provincial People's Committee awarded Hon Cau Island the status of a provincial-level historical site.
