On December 13, Canadian Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland announced that the country will respond strongly if the US imposes unreasonable taxes on exports from the land of maple leaves.
Canada is looking for ways to respond to tariff increases from the new US administration of Donald Trump. |
According to Reuters , Ms. Freeland's statement came after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with the premiers of Canada's provinces. At the meeting, some premiers voiced their support for strong responses to the tariffs that the US threatened to impose.
Notably, some premiers have also proposed that Prime Minister Trudeau cut off the supply of energy and other key products that the US “depends on” from Canada.
Ontario Premier Doug Ford, who is currently the Speaker of the Council of the Federation, said the meeting was a “good first step” as Canada prepares to counter US President-elect Donald Trump’s tariff policies.
After being re-elected, Mr. Trump announced that he would impose a 25% tax on imported goods from Canada and Mexico if the two neighboring countries did not prevent drugs and immigrants from flooding across the US border.
Canada has been the top exporter to the US over the past period. From January to September 2024, Canada exported approximately $435 billion worth of goods to the US.
In addition, about 60% of the world's largest economy 's crude oil imports and 85% of its electricity imports come from the land of the maple leaf. Canada is also the largest supplier of steel, aluminum and uranium to the United States.
