Rivers, streams, ponds, and lakes in mountainous and highland areas often have hidden risks and dangers that are rarely warned by signs indicating their depth. Deep water holes, underwater whirlpools, and quicksand are difficult to detect with the naked eye.
These are the “death holes” that cause tragic drownings for children. When going swimming, children often go in groups, initially choosing shallow water to bathe, then swimming to deeper places to experience the thrill. Due to lack of recognition skills, the risk of falling into deep water, whirlpools leading to drowning is very likely to occur.
The situation of children bathing in rivers and streams is common today in mountainous and rural areas. |
Normally, children and students in rural areas are not equipped with the necessary skills when coming into contact with rivers and streams. When an accident occurs, they are almost completely lacking in the skills to save drowning people, so one child who has an accident will risk dragging many others along as they rush in to save their friends and drown.
Tragic drowning incidents occur every summer, with victims mostly students of all ages. Faced with potential risks, schools and localities need to increase awareness of the importance of drowning prevention and the regularity of this work.
Schools need to regularly disseminate andeducate students about anti-drowning, rescue and first aid skills. Strengthen education on self-control, awareness when participating in experiential activities and skills to respond to the environment, especially the water environment. Localities need to conduct surveys of ponds, lakes, rivers, streams, dams to post warning signs of depth and danger so that people in general and children in particular are aware of potential risks in these areas.
Teach children skills to help them have fun and stay safe while swimming. |
When students are on summer vacation in the locality, youth union organizations need to coordinate to organize swimming classes, teach life-saving skills; and mobilize the construction of public swimming pools so that children have a safe swimming space during the summer. Parents need to strengthen the management of their children during the summer vacation, avoid letting them be idle, gather and invite each other to swim in ponds and lakes spontaneously.
