In the Premier League, players are not allowed to play for their parent club while on loan. However, this rule does not apply in UEFA competitions.

According to talkSPORT , Asensio was allowed to play because UEFA regulations state that “clubs cannot exert any influence on another team's decision on which players will play in a match”.

Previously, Samuel Iling-Junior played for Bologna in the match against Aston Villa in the Champions League qualifying round this season. Notably, the 21-year-old player is still an official member of Aston Villa.
