National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man meets with President of the German Senate and President of the Canadian Senate

(Chinhphu.vn) - On the morning of July 30 local time, at the United Nations headquarters in Geneva (Switzerland), on the occasion of attending the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man met with President of the German Senate Anke Rehlinger and President of the Canadian Senate Raymonde Gagné.

At a meeting with President of the German Senate Anke Rehlinger, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man affirmed that Vietnam always highly appreciates the role and position of Germany and attaches importance to consolidating and developing the strategic partnership between the two countries.

Expressing his delight at the positive developments in the Vietnam-Germany relationship in recent times, especially the cooperation between the two countries' National Assemblies that has been continuously consolidated and developed well, the National Assembly Chairman suggested that the two sides continue to promote delegation exchanges at all levels, especially between the National Assembly leaders, the National Assembly's specialized committees and young parliamentarians; at the same time, effectively implement existing cooperation mechanisms and coordinate in organizing activities to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations in 2025.

National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man proposed that the German Parliament soon complete the ratification of the Vietnam - EU Investment Protection Agreement (EVIPA) and establish a Germany - Vietnam Parliamentary Friendship Group in the German Parliament, as well as lobby the European Commission (EC) to remove the IUU "yellow card" on Vietnamese seafood exports.

For her part, President of the German Senate Anke Rehlinger highly appreciated Vietnam's socio-economic development achievements in recent times, as well as Vietnam's role and position in the international arena; emphasizing that Vietnam is one of Germany's leading important partners in the Indo-Pacific strategy; and affirmed that Germany will continue to be one of Vietnam's leading trade partners and one of the major investors.

The two sides agreed to promote multilateralism; continue to closely coordinate and support each other at multilateral forums, especially the United Nations (UN) and inter-parliamentary forums; and support the settlement of disputes by peaceful means on the basis of international law, the UN Charter and the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea.

The two sides also discussed measures to promote people-to-people exchange, including creating conditions for the community of nearly 300,000 Vietnamese people living, studying and working in Germany.

On this occasion, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man invited the President of the Senate and the President of the German Bundestag to soon visit Vietnam.

At the meeting with President of the Canadian Senate Raymonde Gagné, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man expressed his deep gratitude to the President of the Canadian Senate and Parliament for supporting and assisting Vietnam in successfully organizing the Conference of the Executive Board of the Francophone Parliamentary Union (APF) in Vietnam in January 2025 and issuing the Can Tho Declaration on Francophone cooperation on sustainable agriculture, food security and climate change.

Assessing bilateral relations, the National Assembly Chairman expressed his delight at the positive developments in the Vietnam-Canada Comprehensive Partnership in all areas, in which parliamentary relations emerged as a bright spot. The two National Assemblies have stepped up contacts and coordination at international forums such as the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA).

The National Assembly Chairman particularly appreciated the close cooperation between the two National Assemblies within the Francophone Parliamentary Union (APF) mechanism through the exchange of information, experience and mutual support; suggested that the two sides promote exchanges and contacts between parliamentarians and enhance cooperation at multilateral parliamentary forums.

On this occasion, National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man invited the President of the Canadian Senate and leaders of the Canadian Parliament to soon visit Vietnam.

Canadian Senate President Raymonde Gagné shared National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man's assessments of the situation and major orientations in enhancing the friendly and cooperative relations between the two countries, especially between the two National Assemblies; and respectfully invited National Assembly Chairman Tran Thanh Man to visit Canada at an appropriate time.

The President of the Canadian Senate affirmed that Canada attaches importance to and will continue to promote the extensive development of the Vietnam-Canada Comprehensive Partnership, emphasizing that the relationship with Vietnam is one of the leading pillars in Canada's strategy on the Indo-Pacific; and expressed sympathy for the losses caused by Typhoon Wipha to Vietnam.

The President of the Canadian Senate highly appreciated the achievements that Vietnam has made in socio-economic development, restructuring the apparatus as well as the recent amendment of the Penal Code, which reduced the number of crimes punishable by death.

The two sides agreed to strengthen coordination and promote bilateral cooperation and cooperation at multilateral forums, jointly support the respect for international law, including the settlement of disputes by peaceful means in accordance with international law, the UN Charter and conventions; continue to discuss and consider upgrading bilateral relations when the opportunity is ripe.
