There is an ordering mechanism to innovate mining industry technology.

To innovate and modernize technology in the mining industry, there is a need for an output-based ordering mechanism to motivate researchers, thereby transferring scientific research results into practice.

Many businesses have reached regional level.

According to the assessment of the Ministry of Industry and Trade , after more than 8 years of implementing the Project "Innovation and modernization of technology in the mining industry until 2025" (Decision No. 259/QD-TTg dated February 22, 2017 of the Prime Minister), the mining industry has clearly transformed. Notably, from leaders of corporations to business leaders, all perceive that innovation and modernization of technology is a task in itself, thereby making great efforts and actively innovating technology and equipment for mining and processing minerals.

Currently, "there are businesses that have reached the regional level." Dr. Dao Duy Anh, Deputy Director of the Department of Innovation, Green Transformation and Industrial Promotion, informed at the seminar "Innovation and modernization of technology in the mining industry", recently organized by the Industry and Trade Magazine.

Dr. Dao Duy Anh said that in the processing of bauxite or copper ore, we are now on par with developed countries in terms of both technical standards and automation levels. In the field of oil and gas exploitation and processing, we have researched and manufactured deepwater drilling rigs to put into practice, and at the same time applied technologies and models to increase oil recovery in mines under exploitation. With other minerals such as apatite or titanium, we have also built mines that carry out the entire process from exploitation to processing.

Associate Professor, Dr. Phung Manh Dac, General Secretary of the Vietnam Mining Science and Technology Association, added that in the past 10 years, the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group (TKV) has synchronously implemented automation, mechanization and computerization projects in most of the group and recently continued to implement a project on digital transformation in small enterprises in its affiliated units. Currently, the group has about 14 mechanized tunneling lines and nearly 30 semi-mechanized lines. In longwall mining technology, there are 14 synchronized mechanized mining lines with an output of about 14 - 15% of the total underground mining output. Most of the controls for gas, wind, conveyor belts, power grids, and water pumping stations are also automated...

“Up to this point, we have had a relatively solid start to prepare for a new phase, which is building a smart mine,” Mr. Dac acknowledged.

Prioritize green transformation chain

Although he has achieved very positive results, Mr. Phung Manh Dac admitted that for underground mines, the rate of mechanized mining compared to other countries is still low, accounting for about 13 - 14%. Therefore, it is necessary to invest in converting all coal to mechanized coal mining, instead of blasting.

Currently, in open-pit mines, trucks with a capacity of up to 100 tons, even up to 130 tons, using diesel fuel create huge emissions. Therefore, it is necessary to approach the world level by using electric battery and fuel cell energy sources for green conversion. Currently, mines, including ore and coal mining, have gone down to a depth of - 300 meters, so it is necessary to change the mode of transport from cars to slope conveyor belts as the world's experience. "This is very fundamental, with the nature of changing the entire mining technology", Mr. Dac emphasized.

To develop the mining industry to be both efficient, sustainable and environmentally friendly, Associate Professor, Dr. Lieutenant Colonel La Duc Duong, Deputy Head of the Research and Development Department, Institute of Biomaterials and Environment, said that, first of all, for the exploration and mine establishment part, we should apply high technology, build 3D geological models, use digital conversion software to optimize cutting content, and plan more specific and accurate mining.

After exploration, minimally invasive mining technology will be used. Using precise drilling and blasting technologies in the mine seam, automating the mining process to minimize losses during mining.

After mining, the selection and processing process must also aim at green technology, which can use dry selection technology, use environmentally friendly biological collection agents, or use gravity selection methods, save water to minimize the impact on the environment. In the selection process, it is necessary to apply selection technology and water circulation during the mining process. At the same time, it is necessary to control the use of chemicals in the selection process and isolate heavy metal pollution during the mining process, and monitor dust and gas in real time.

According to Mr. Duong, there are currently many difficulties in implementing scientific research results from the transfer topic into practice. He suggested that there should be a mechanism for ordering according to output results to motivate researchers; tax incentives, credits for production lines, especially mineral processing lines and priority for green transformation lines; creating a legal corridor for new material technology and chemicals on the market.

Agreeing that the State needs to have ordering programs, Dr. Dao Duy Anh added that an extremely important factor is the need to absorb advanced science and technology from countries around the world through international cooperation.

In addition, the policy mechanism must be suitable for each type of enterprise. For corporations and general companies with strong economic potential, they need to be supported with appropriate mechanisms and policies. As for small enterprises, it is necessary to focus on capital support, technology conversion consulting as well as training support.

On the part of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, in the coming time, it will propose and advise the Government on policy mechanisms, including the establishment of research centers and testing centers to support small businesses. “The Ministry will also always accompany businesses in the process of innovation and modernization of technology in the mining and mineral processing industry in particular and in the industry in general,” Dr. Dao Duy Anh pledged.
