Nvidia Corporation will provide a total of 260,000 graphics processing units (GPUs) to the Korean Government and four major corporations including Samsung Electronics, SK Group, Hyundai Motor Group, and Naver Cloud, paving the way for Korea to quickly become a key country in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
South Korea's priority to receive a large number of GPUs, amid a global shortage of the commodity, and participation in Nvidia's AI infrastructure ecosystem, is expected to accelerate the pace of building South Korea's Sovereign AI.
During the APEC Summit Week, President Lee Jae-myung and leaders of several major Korean corporations met with Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang.
At the online press conference that followed, Nvidia announced the Korea AI Technology and Infrastructure Development Initiative. The focus of the initiative is that South Korea will use nearly 260,000 of Nvidia's latest Blackwell GPUs to build AI infrastructure, thereby promoting AI development and digital transformation in key industries such as automobiles, manufacturing, semiconductors and telecommunications.
Nvidia estimates that with the new Blackwell infrastructure, South Korea's total AI GPU count will increase from 65,000 to over 300,000, laying the foundation for South Korea to become a world- class AI leader.
In addition, Nvidia also plans to cooperate extensively with Korean companies in areas such as 6th generation mobile networks (6G), healthcare and quantum computing.
This cooperation between Nvidia and Korea is considered to have a meaning beyond a mere “hardware agreement” and become a platform alliance.
The South Korean government and four corporations will not only use GPUs but also take advantage of various Nvidia platforms to build an “AI factory”.
Analysts said Nvidia chose South Korea as a core base to build AI infrastructure because the country has a solid value chain in the semiconductor, manufacturing, telecommunications, gaming and AI startup industries, along with a market capable of converting AI infrastructure into practical industrial applications./.
