Young people in Pom Coong village continue to preserve the traditional brocade weaving craft.
From a small rice field to a crowded brocade shop
Ms. Ha Thi Hoan, a simple and honest Thai ethnic woman in Pom Coong hamlet, Mai Chau commune, once devoted her life to a small field of only 1,000 square meters . There were years when poverty was like a shadow that followed her family. Every season, she diligently plowed, planted, and tended each clump of rice and potatoes, but the income was not enough to exchange for a comfortable life.
However, in the past few years, the life of this woman has turned a new page thanks to the strong development of community tourism in Mai Chau. Realizing that the brocade weaving products of the Thai ethnic group are increasingly attracting tourists, Ms. Hoan boldly opened a small shop right in her simple stilt house, selling brocade scarves, bags, shirts, and skirts.
Not only selling goods, she also turned the corner of her house into a “small stage” to demonstrate traditional weaving for tourists to come and experience. The weaving table creaks, the threads are brightly colored, her hands quickly weave each delicate line of ethnic patterns. Tourists, both domestic and foreign, stop to watch, then buy them as gifts.
“Tourists come to watch me weave, then they buy scarves and bags. At first I was hesitant because I was poor and my neighborhood was poor, but now I am confident in introducing Thai products to foreigners,” Ms. Hoan shared enthusiastically, her eyes shining with pride.
From a woman who worked hard all year round, Ms. Hoan has now become a small “ambassador” of Thai culture in the heart of Mai Chau. Not only does she have extra income, she also spreads her love for traditional crafts to the younger generation in the village, inspiring sustainable change from the community’s own internal strength. Thanks to that, the traditional brocade weaving craft is not only preserved but also thrives, becoming an attractive tourism product.
Not only Ms. Hoan, dozens of households in Pom Coong have also changed and gradually improved thanks to knowing how to take advantage of opportunities from developing community tourism.
Revitalizing a rural area
Infrastructure investment in the commune in recent years has continued to be promoted thanks to the effective integration of capital sources from the Central, the province and the people's contributions. Mai Chau commune currently has 125 investment projects with a total capital of more than 1,135 billion VND, focusing on the fields of transportation, education , health, electricity, water, information technology and tourism infrastructure.
It is impossible not to mention the impressive development in trade - service - tourism activities of Mai Chau. The whole commune currently has 584 individual business households, 61 accommodation establishments in operation, including 44 homestays with many traditional stilt house architectures. Experiential, resort and ecological tourism are attracting more and more tourists, creating a large source of income for the people in the commune.
Along with that, tourism promotion and advertising work is being stepped up, helping the image of Mai Chau to be closer to domestic and international friends. Festivals and cultural and sports activities associated with national identity are regularly held, creating a unique highlight for local tourism.
In addition, the industrial and handicraft sectors continue to be stable with 279 production facilities in operation, creating jobs for thousands of workers. Effectively operating cooperatives have contributed to promoting agricultural production, trade and services, and building local agricultural and brocade value chains. The application of science and technology in production is increasingly widespread, improving productivity and quality of agricultural products.
Along with economic development, Mai Chau commune always pays attention to social security work. The movement "Join hands to eliminate temporary and dilapidated houses" has brought positive results, 75 households have been supported to build new houses. Policies for people with meritorious services and social protection have been fully and promptly implemented.
Believe in the road ahead
According to comrade Ha Van Di - Secretary of the Mai Chau Commune Party Committee, shared: By 2030, Mai Chau Commune aims to become a key eco-tourism area of the country. The Commune will continue to arrange the apparatus "Slim - Lean - Strong - Effective - Effective - Efficient" associated with restructuring and building a team of cadres with sufficient qualities, capacity, and prestige equal to the task; focus on developing tourism associated with preserving national cultural values, especially Thai ethnic culture; developing green, environmentally friendly tourism; applying digital transformation in tourism promotion and management.
Along with that, the development of the agricultural and forestry processing industry, construction materials and traditional industries associated with local materials will be a sustainable direction. Trade and service activities will also continue to diversify, creating a solid foundation for people to develop the economy.
With the goal of striving to become an eco-tourism area of the whole country by 2030, although there are many challenges ahead, the belief in the future development of Mai Chau after the merger is spreading in every village. That belief is nurtured by the existing changes, by the participation of the entire political system and the dynamism, solidarity and creativity of each person here.
