According to SCMP sources, super typhoon Ragasa has disrupted Apple's iPhone production in Shenzhen (China), and also affected cross-border orders from e-commerce platforms.

Foxconn, the world's largest contract electronics manufacturer, has suspended assembly operations in Shenzhen, home to the Product Enclosure Business Group, the division responsible for making high-speed connectors, memory and mechanical parts for iPhones.

Listed in Taiwan as Hon Hai Precision Industry, Foxconn said via its WeChat account that production would resume as local authorities lowered the typhoon-related risk warning level.

Foxconn's production operations in Shenzhen account for about 25% of its total capacity, spread across two major regions, according to data cited by Morgan Stanley in Economic Daily News in 2022. Shenzhen is also known as the southern technology hub of Guangdong province, China.

Ragasa was the strongest typhoon of the year so far, making landfall in the south of the country with heavy rain and strong winds. The super typhoon's impact extended beyond the factory, disrupting essential transportation and logistics routes connecting global markets with local manufacturers.

Gardenia Zhao, assistant manager at DLX Global Logistics, said it will take three to five days to restore cross-border freight routes to serve the Black Friday shopping season in the US in November.

Owners of some stores on e-commerce platforms, such as Amazon and Temu, said shipping was also suspended due to bad weather.

According to Enmedia , the e-commerce platform Shopee, which is quite popular in Southeast Asia, also stopped receiving goods from warehouses in Dongguan and Hong Kong from noon on September 23. Sharing the same opinion with Zhao, Tian Yong, co-founder and partner of Pilotage Consulting (headquartered in Shanghai), estimated that the shipping process could be interrupted for up to 3 days.

Also due to the super typhoon, major Chinese delivery platforms such as Meituan, JD.com and Ele.me, temporarily suspended operations in Shenzhen and Guangzhou. Ride-hailing services Didi Chuxing and Amap stopped accepting rides in southern coastal cities including Guangzhou, Shenzhen, Zhuhai.
