AI Slop and Brainrot: Content Reshaping the Video Viewing Experience
The explosion of these low-quality AI videos is linked to two main concepts: AI Slop and Brainrot.
According to Oxford University's definition, "AI slop" refers to low-quality, inaccurate, or fabricated content that is distributed indiscriminately to gain views and subscribers or to influence political opinion. Those who create large amounts of this content are called "sloppers."
Along with that is Brainrot, which is meaningless, low-quality video content that creates an effect that erodes the viewer's mental or intellectual state; it is often created using AI. The main purpose of both AI slop and Brainrot is to attract the viewer's attention.
Vietnam has 1.69 billion views of AI Slop.

In terms of regular followers, Vietnam is also not immune to this trend, ranking 15th globally with 4.37 million subscribers to AI Slop channels.

Compared to other countries, South Korea is currently the "capital" of AI-spam content views, with a total of 8.45 billion views from popular channels. Meanwhile, Spain leads the world in subscriber count, attracting 20.22 million subscribers to "AI slop" channels.
Profit motives and user experience are at odds.
The enormous profits are the driving force behind the explosion of AI-generated spam content. Many "AI slop" channels earn millions of dollars annually. For example, India's Bandar Apna Dost, the world's most-watched channel (2.07 billion views), is estimated to earn up to $4.25 million (over 100 billion VND) per year.
However, what's even more alarming is that the experience of new users is being overwhelmed by this content. In a Kapwing experiment, researchers created a new account and browsed the first 500 short videos (YouTube Shorts). The results showed that 21% of the videos were AI-generated. Notably, "Brainrot" content – meaningless, addictive, and mind-numbing videos – accounted for 33% of new users' feeds.
The rise of "AI slop" and "Brainrot" has put YouTube in a dilemma. While YouTube CEO Neal Mohan touts AI generation as a technological revolution similar to sound synthesizers in music, YouTube worries that advertisers will feel their brands are devalued by appearing alongside these unprofessional and soulless videos. Nevertheless, with their ability to retain viewers through addictive content, "AI slop" and "Brainrot" are quietly reshaping global online video viewing culture.
