On the evening of December 10th, the Vietnamese swimming team competed in their opening event. Swimming is one of the most highly regarded sports in Vietnam and the region. The 200m individual medley is particularly noteworthy, featuring two top-level athletes, Tran Hung Nguyen and Nguyen Quang Thuan. |

Hung Nguyen is the strongest contender for the gold medal in the men's 200m individual medley, having dominated the event since the 2019 SEA Games. Meanwhile, Quang Thuan has yet to win a medal in this event after three appearances at the Games. |

As expected, Hung Nguyen continued to dominate. He maintained a steady pace in the butterfly and backstroke before surging ahead in the 50m breaststroke and 50m freestyle. In the men's 200m individual medley, athletes perform a different swimming technique every 50 meters. |

In the end, Hung Nguyen finished first with a time of 2 minutes 02 seconds 11, Gian Christopher San (Philippines) came second with 2 minutes 03 seconds 88, and Quang Thuan finished third with a time of 2 minutes 04 seconds 19. |

This represents Hung Nguyen's absolute dominance at the regional level. Following the era of Nguyen Thi Anh Vien, Hung Nguyen, along with Nguyen Huy Hoang and Pham Thanh Bao, are the pillars of the Vietnamese national swimming team. |

Meanwhile, Ánh Viên's younger brother, Quang Thuấn, has yet to win his first gold medal. After three editions of the Games, he has only won two silver medals and one bronze medal. |

The consolation for Thuan was his two silver medals in the men's 400m individual medley. This bronze medal was the first time Thuan had finished in the top 3 in the men's 200m individual medley. This is a significant step forward. |

However, Quang Thuan doesn't seem happy with this result. He still has other events to improve his performance in, especially his strongest event, the men's 400m individual medley, in the coming days. |

Besides Hung Nguyen's gold medal, the most significant achievement in swimming was Vo Thi My Tien's silver medal in the 200m butterfly. Notably, the swimmer with 20 SEA Games gold medals only finished third, behind even My Tien. |
