Van Minh wins historic gold medal for Vietnamese MMA at the SEA Games. |
However, MMA made its debut at the 33rd SEA Games as a demonstration sport. Therefore, Van Minh's gold medal was not included in the overall medal standings. Nevertheless, the fighters' performances showed the clear potential for development of MMA in Vietnam.
In the men's 65 kg category, Quang Van Minh became the center of attention when he completely dominated his opponent Tan Yee Siang (Malaysia) in the final. Minh started proactively, controlled the pace well, and continuously pressured the Malaysian fighter, preventing him from turning the tide.
His convincing victory earned him a bonus of 200 million VND from the Vietnam MMA Federation. This reward recognizes his efforts and the historical significance of Vietnam's first participation in regional MMA competitions.
Earlier, in the women's 54 kg category, Duong Thi Thanh Binh fought valiantly but lost to Wulan of Indonesia in the final. Although she finished as runner-up, Thanh Binh still left a lasting impression with her skillful fighting style, composure, and fair-minded spirit.
The 33rd SEA Games marked the first appearance of MMA (mixed martial arts), at the suggestion of host country Thailand. While the absence of medal count made it more of a demonstration sport, it was still considered an important stepping stone towards becoming an official competitive sport.
What Vietnamese MMA fighters demonstrated at the SEA Games 33, from their confidence and ambition to their maturity in technique and tactics, shows that the sport is heading in the right direction and deserves more investment in the future.
