Cambodia withdraws from the U19 futsal tournament. |
The decision was made just weeks before the tournament was due to begin, creating significant disruption to the organization and the competitive landscape of youth sports in the region.
The tournament, held in Thailand from December 23rd to 29th, was seen as a platform for young Southeast Asian futsal teams to gain experience and prepare for international competition next year. Cambodia's unexpected withdrawal reduced the number of participating teams to six, forcing organizers to adjust the grouping format.
Group A now includes host nation Thailand, Vietnam, and Brunei. Group B brings together Indonesia, Myanmar, and Malaysia. Despite the reduced number of teams, the matches promise to be intense, with strong futsal nations like Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia considered strong contenders for the championship.
Currently, Cambodia has virtually frozen all sporting activities. At the end of November, the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia (NOCC) decided to withdraw from nine sports, including men's football. At that time, Cambodia was only participating in 12 sports.
By the morning of December 10th, Cambodia had withdrawn from all 12 sports it had registered to compete in at the 33rd SEA Games. Phnom Penh was concerned about the safety risks for its athletes at the Games held in Thailand. Previously, 30 Cambodian athletes had participated in the parade at the opening ceremony of the 33rd SEA Games.
