National Highway 1 through the eastern and western gateways of Ho Chi Minh City is often strewn with nails, putting many motorists in danger.
On the morning of November 20, many people living along National Highway 1, passing Song Than overpass, Linh Xuan ward, picked up thousands of diamond-shaped pieces of steel on a 400-meter stretch of road passing Linh Xuan overpass. Sharp nails with two ends 1-2 cm long appeared densely in the motorbike lane.

To avoid pedestrians from running over them, many people living along the highway used magnetic ropes to collect nearly 2 kg of steel fragments and nails in two hours. They even used paint to paint the Linh Xuan overpass with the words "road has nails, drive slowly" as a warning.
Mr. Dinh Hung, 46 years old, a motorbike taxi driver in this area, said that many bad guys spread nails from dawn until now, causing workers and people going to work to run over and have their tires punctured, forcing them to walk, sometimes falling off their bikes. "When hit by this type of nail, the tire often has a big hole that cannot be patched and must be replaced," Mr. Hung said.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Hai, Chairman of Linh Xuan Ward People's Committee, the area where nails are often scattered is at the gateway connecting Binh Duong province with Ho Chi Minh City, at the intersection of three routes: National Highway 1, National Highway 1K and Pham Van Dong Street. The road stretching about 400 m through this area has many workers and high traffic density, so it is targeted by bad guys.
This situation has been going on for many months, when the ward launched a high-level crackdown, the spreading of nails decreased, but recently it has recurred. "This group came from another place and operated very sophisticatedly, placing many sharp steel bars on the footrest of the scooter while driving along the national highway and using their feet to push it down the road, making it very difficult to detect," said Mr. Hai.
To limit this situation, the ward will soon coordinate with Binh Duong Provincial Police to patrol and control, requiring repair shop owners not to participate in spreading nails. At the same time, the government will use cars with magnets to attract nails to ensure safety for road users.
The situation of spreading nails to trap pedestrians often appears on National Highway 1 through Binh Tan and Binh Chanh districts, from Ho Chi Minh City to the West. Infrastructure Development Investment Joint Stock Company (IDICO), the unit managing National Highway 1 from An Suong roundabout to An Lac roundabout, regularly mobilizes workers to use trucks to suck up nails and sharp iron objects along the route.
A representative of IDICO company said that the road through Pouyuen Industrial Park is often blocked by obstacles due to the concentration of workers. During holidays and Tet, when people drive motorbikes home, this situation increases, causing insecurity.
Meanwhile, it is difficult to catch this behavior because the groups spreading nails change their methods and connect with other people to spread nails. To prevent this, Binh Chanh District Police have urged landlords to terminate contracts with suspicious repair shops.
