On October 28, a source from Vinh Long General Hospital said that the hospital team had just successfully operated on a rare case of cystic splenic tumor using endoscopic surgery.
Previously, a male patient named NVT (48 years old, residing in Vinh Long) was admitted to the hospital with symptoms of persistent dull pain in the left hypochondrium, mild fullness and fatigue. The results of the diagnostic imaging showed a cystic tumor measuring 6x6 cm, occupying nearly 2/3 of the spleen volume. After an interdisciplinary consultation, the patient was indicated for laparoscopic splenectomy.

The surgery was performed by the General Surgery Department team. The doctors released the splenic ligament, carefully dissected the cyst, controlled and cut the splenic pedicle, and then removed the entire spleen through the expanded trocar. During the surgery, the operations were performed gently and meticulously, avoiding damage to the pancreas, stomach, and diaphragm. The entire process took place safely within 2 hours, with almost no blood loss and no complications.
After surgery, the patient recovered quickly, vital signs were stable, and he could move lightly and eat after 24 hours.
According to doctors, splenic cysts are rare, accounting for less than 1% of spleen lesions, often discovered incidentally through ultrasound or CT scan. When the tumor grows large, the patient may experience symptoms of compression, risk of rupture or infection.
Meanwhile, laparoscopic splenectomy is a difficult technique, requiring experienced surgeons and modern equipment. Compared to open surgery, this method helps patients reduce pain, has better aesthetics, a shorter hospital stay and minimizes post-operative complications.
