Patient BXQ, residing in Thuy Lien commune, Thai Thuy district ( Thai Binh ) has stomach cancer and had the first gastric resection surgery in 2019. About 2 months ago, the patient had dull epigastric pain, poor appetite, poor sleep, fatigue and weight loss, so he went to Thai Binh Provincial General Hospital for examination.
After performing paraclinical tests, the doctor diagnosed the patient with recurrent gastric cancer at the anastomosis, requiring immediate surgery, otherwise it would endanger his health and life.
The surgical team, including the Oncology Center and the Department of Surgery, performed surgery on the patient. During the surgery, the surgeons removed adhesions in the abdominal organs and discovered that the tumor had invaded many other organs.

The major surgery lasted more than 4 hours, the surgical team had to intervene in 6 organs in one surgery, including resection of the entire remaining stomach, resection of the splenic flexure of the colon, resection of the spleen, resection of part of the left lobe of the liver, resection of the tail of the pancreas, resection of part of the left diaphragm and dissection of the metastatic lymph node system. The patient had the tumor and invasive cancer completely removed, after surgery the patient's health was stable and recovered well.
Specialist II Doctor Nguyen Phuc Kien, Director of the Oncology Center (Thai Binh General Hospital) shared: Patient Q.'s case is very difficult and complicated because the patient had surgery 5 years ago, so the anatomical landmarks have changed, the organs in the abdomen are stuck together and especially the tumor has invaded many surrounding organs.
The entire surgical team was highly focused and coordinated to complete this extremely rare major surgery for gastrointestinal cancer. The complete removal of the tumor in this surgery created conditions and opportunities for the patient to continue treatment with other methods to help prolong life and improve the patient's quality of life.
