Ensuring data safety and security is a major challenge in building and developing digital libraries.

(Fatherland) - Digital libraries operate mainly in the digital environment, thus facing many risks of data insecurity and safety. This raises the urgent need for attention, policies and strategies to deal with these issues in library operations.

In recent years, along with the remarkable development of science and technology, the digital transformation process taking place strongly in our country has created a clear change in awareness and action in all industries and fields, including library activities.

Mr. Le Duc Thang, Head of the Information Technology Department - National Library of Vietnam, said that the great benefits that digital transformation brings to society in general and the library industry in particular have been affirmed with the fact that almost all transactions can be carried out through technology, especially mobile technology.

However, along with the advantages, the risk of losing information safety and security is also posing many challenges. This requires special attention to ensuring information security during the digital transformation process.

According to Mr. Le Duc Thang, digital library activities with the core of digital data, along with the advantages and rapid development of information and communication technology, have helped to organize management, contributing to increasing the efficiency of library activities.

However, in addition to the advantages, the higher the level of technology application, the more risks of safety and security are hidden. This is considered one of the most important issues for digital libraries and digital data. Therefore, the work of safety and security of digital data needs special attention.

Identifiable risks to digital data security and safety include data loss, data corruption, data corruption, loss of control, and uncontrolled data dissemination due to theft or user error. The main causes of the above risks can be divided into two groups: objective and subjective.

Subjective causes can be mentioned as: Lack of correct and complete awareness of data safety and security; User awareness and responsibility; No risk and crisis handling policy or policy is not strong enough; System is not designed with security or weak security; Data is not backed up periodically and scientifically; Wrong use of processing software, wrong encryption method; Internet usage policy for staff and readers is not strict...

Objective causes include: No security software, specialized software; Digital library management software has security errors; Loss of storage devices; Virus attacks, encryption, data deletion; Hackers infiltrate, attack, sabotage... Or other risks such as natural disasters, fires, explosions, human sabotage...

To solve these problems, Mr. Le Duc Thang said that libraries need to periodically analyze, evaluate, and clearly identify the problems of their libraries. From there, there will be solutions and plans to solve them. Minimize negative impacts on the unit's operations. Some basic solutions to ensure the safety and security of digital data need to be implemented and applied, such as: Strictly implementing the regulations of the Party, the Government, and the Ministry of Information and Communications on ensuring the safety and security of digital data and network security; Developing and promulgating policies on digital libraries; Deploying technical solutions to ensure the safety and security of digital libraries; Strengthening propaganda, training, and coaching for librarians in general, and the department in charge of information safety and security in particular.

"To effectively and sustainably carry out digital transformation, build and develop digital libraries, the work of ensuring information and data safety and security needs to be taken seriously and implemented methodically, in accordance with procedures and technical requirements. In particular, it is necessary to strictly comply with the orientation and legal documents, regulations of the State, and instructions of ministries, departments and branches on the issue of information and data safety and security," Mr. Le Duc Thang shared./.
