An important foreign political and cultural event – the 9th Vietnam – Laos – China Con Throwing Festival – will be held in Dien Bien Phu ward, Dien Bien province from December 19 to 21, 2025. This is a periodic activity, rotating every two years between the provinces and districts sharing the border of the three countries, aiming to strengthen the traditional friendly neighborly relationship.
This festival is of special significance in the context of people-to-people exchange and border cooperation activities being increasingly focused on. The event aims to consolidate traditional friendship, enhance connection and mutual understanding between authorities and communities along the border, and introduce unique cultural values of ethnic groups.
The festival is expected to attract about 1,200 delegates, artisans, athletes and support staff. The participating delegations include: Dien Bien and Lai Chau provinces (Vietnam); Nhot U and Phong Sa Ly districts of Phong Sa Ly province (Laos); Giang Thanh district and Pu Nhi city of Yunnan province (China). The participation of many local delegations demonstrates the spirit of open cooperation and the close relationship between the three countries.
With the theme “Solidarity, Friendship - Border Love - Development Together”, the festival includes a series of unique cultural and sports activities. In particular, the opening and closing ceremonies will be a space to vividly and colorfully recreate the traditional culture of ethnic groups in the border areas.
The cultural and tourism product exhibition is an important part, introducing dozens of handicrafts, local specialties and photos of community life along the border. This activity not only promotes tourism potential but also enhances opportunities for understanding and cooperation between businesses and people of the three countries.
The sports competition is always considered the most attractive highlight. The competitions with strong highland identity such as throwing con, pushing stick, shooting crossbow, top-up fighting, tug-of-war will take place enthusiastically. In particular, this festival also adds pickleball, a new sport that is attracting young people, creating an interesting blend between tradition and modernity. Each competition promises to bring a healthy competitive atmosphere and enthusiastic cheers from locals and tourists.
Besides cultural and sporting activities, the festival also includes a famtrip program to survey tourist destinations in Dien Bien, connecting with the Lao and Chinese markets. This activity aims to open up opportunities for developing sustainable cross-border tourism products. Travel businesses in the region will also have the opportunity to meet, exchange ideas, and seek cooperation.
Thereby, the 9th Three-Country Con Throwing Festival is an opportunity to introduce the unique traditional cultural beauty of the ethnic groups, contributing to promoting socio-economic development, ensuring national defense and security, and further tightening the solidarity and friendship between Party committees, authorities and people in the Vietnam - Laos - China border area.
