Bright spot in winter crop production in mountainous areas

People of Cam Tu commune take care of winter crops.

Right from the beginning of the winter crop, the People's Committee of Cam Tu commune directed the villages to focus on quickly harvesting the summer crop area, freeing up land to plant the winter crop on time. The commune's professional staff regularly followed the fields, guided people on proper planting techniques, and selected crops suitable to the conditions of each field. By October 28, the whole commune had planted 383 hectares of winter crops, including 173 hectares of corn and 139.4 hectares of various vegetables... Although the weather was unfavorable, with continuous storms and rains, with a spirit of urgency and determination, the people and authorities of Cam Tu commune are making efforts to complete the set plan, creating a vibrant competitive atmosphere right from the beginning of the season.

The highlight of this year's winter crop production is that Cam Tu has focused on a suitable crop structure, prioritizing the use of high-yield, good-quality varieties that adapt to harsh weather conditions. On specialized land, farmers plant high-density single-hybrid corn varieties such as VF36, PSC102, DK6919S, DK9955S, NK4300; the selected waxy corn varieties are TBM18, HN68, HN88. Sweet potatoes are grown with popular varieties with stable yields such as KL5, KL209, Hoang Long, 143, VX37. Peanuts are sown with high-yield varieties such as L14, L16, L18, TB25; chili plants with TN16 chili varieties, No. 20 hot chili, 2027 hybrid chili and MIX sweet chili. For the group of cucurbits, people prioritize growing green squash No. 1, Taiwanese green squash, lemon squash, pumpkin F1 125, F1 979 and Japanese pumpkin. Not only focusing on selecting varieties, people in Cam Tu commune also proactively apply scientific and technical advances in production, use balanced fertilizers, water sparingly, cover with plastic to retain moisture and limit weeds and pests. Many households have proactively linked with enterprises and cooperatives in the production and consumption of agricultural products, creating a stable output for winter crop products.

According to the people of Giang Trung village, Cam Tu commune, this year's winter crop has encountered many difficulties due to continuous rain and storms, causing damage to many crop areas. However, thanks to timely guidance from the commune's professional staff on care techniques, replanting and overcoming flooded areas, the crops have now recovered and grown well. Currently, people are continuing to plant squash and some short-term vegetables to take advantage of the season and increase income.

In the 2025-2026 winter crop, Cam Tu commune strives to plant 650.5 hectares of various crops. Of which, corn on rice land is 156.5 hectares; corn on alluvial land and other land is 99 hectares; chili is 13 hectares; sweet potato is 24 hectares; various vegetables and beans are 263 hectares; other crops are 95 hectares. The total production value of the winter crop is 45 billion VND or more, with an average of 75 million VND/ha of planting or more. The area of production linkage and product consumption of the winter crop is 20 hectares. Mr. Nguyen Trong Dong, Vice Chairman of Cam Tu Commune People's Committee, said: "To complete the winter crop production plan, the commune has assigned officials in charge of each locality, regularly inspecting and urging the planting progress, promptly grasping difficulties and problems to have directions for handling. We identify the winter crop as an important production crop, not only contributing to increasing people's income but also helping to compensate for the damage caused by recent storms No. 10 and 11."

According to Mr. Dong, this year the commune pays special attention to the season. For warm-loving plants such as corn, chili, cucumber, the planting has been carried out early by the people. Cold-loving plants such as mustard greens, cabbage, kohlrabi, carrots... are arranged to be planted after this time to suit the weather conditions and grow well. Along with that, the commune encourages people to expand the area of high - value commodity crops, linked to product consumption through contracts with businesses.

In addition to the strong direction of the government, the people of Cam Tu commune also promoted the spirit of initiative, actively applying mechanization to production, striving to complete the target of planting 650.5 hectares of winter crops as planned. At the same time, gradually forming a concentrated winter crop specialized area. Thereby contributing to increasing income, improving life and developing sustainable agricultural economy for local people, making Cam Tu a bright spot in winter crop production in mountainous areas.
