How to treat baldness?

VnExpressVnExpress15/11/2023

Hair transplants, laser treatments, and topical or oral medications can help hair regrow in bald areas of the scalp.

Baldness is a condition where hair falls out excessively, with less hair growing back than it loses, leaving patches of the scalp bare and smooth, with no visible hair follicles.

Dr. Dang Thi Ngoc Bich, a dermatologist and cosmetic skin specialist at Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, said that both men and women can experience baldness, but it is more common in men and is related to genetic factors. Typical symptoms include thinning hair on the top of the head, with the hairline receding towards the back of the head in men, and thinning hair in women starting from the parting line.

Hair loss is treatable, and hair can be regrowed, according to doctors. Depending on the cause and individual condition, the doctor will advise and provide a suitable treatment plan. Patients need to be persistent and may have to try one or more treatments to achieve results.

Dr. Bich stated that there are four common methods for treating baldness:

Oral or topical medication : The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has approved two medications for treating male pattern baldness containing minoxidil and finasteride.

These medications come in topical or oral forms, are recommended for daily use, and require at least 3-4 months or a year to see results. Results also depend on how the medication is used and the dosage. Patients need to maintain long-term use. Hair loss will resume if medication is stopped.

Hair transplantation: This is an invasive medical procedure, and there are two types of hair transplantation to treat hereditary baldness: hair follicle strip excision and hair follicle cluster extraction.

Hair follicle strip excision is a procedure that involves separating a section of scalp containing healthy hair follicles (usually from the back of the head, where there is a lot of hair). This skin is then divided into smaller pieces and grafted onto the bald area.

Hair follicle extraction is performed by taking healthy hair follicles from the scalp, then making small incisions in the area of hair loss and transplanting the follicles into these holes. This allows hair to grow evenly across the scalp.

Dr. Bich stated that this method has long-lasting effects, with hair growing back naturally. However, patients may need multiple transplant procedures, the cost is quite high, and the effectiveness of the treatment depends heavily on the skill of the surgeon.

Low-energy laser: Using lasers with extremely low energy pulses helps increase blood circulation in the scalp and stimulate hair follicle growth. According to Dr. Bich, this is a minimally invasive method, easy to perform, and has very few side effects. Treatment effectiveness varies depending on individual circumstances. The laser stimulates remaining hair follicles on the scalp but has no effect on hair follicles that have been lost.

Treatment with microneedling or micro-injection : Using a micro-needling device or pen, or injecting medication into the bald area of the scalp. The injected medication includes hair growth stimulants, platelet-rich plasma, or exosome stem cells (derived from endogenous cells in the body).

Dr. Bich noted that some hair loss treatments may not be suitable for everyone and could cause allergic reactions. Patients should consult their doctor for specific advice.
