Many days have passed, but even now, teachers, friends, and many people in Ha Tinh still haven't forgotten the tense moment of waiting for the live broadcast of the awards ceremony at the International Chemistry Olympiad in Switzerland. And then, joy erupted when the name of Vietnam – Dinh Cao Son – was announced as the winner of the gold medal. The image of the young man from Ha Tinh, holding the national flag, stepping onto the podium of honor, quickly spread through the media, becoming a beautiful, moving, honorable, and proud image for the people of this studious region.
Welcoming the "golden boy" back home, representatives from the Ha Tinh Department of Education and Training, his teachers, family, and relatives traveled over 300 km to Noi Bai International Airport. Back home, a large number of teachers and students from Ha Tinh Specialized High School braved the sun to welcome the winner of the International Chemistry Olympiad gold medal.
Dinh Cao Son returned to his hometown to a warm welcome from provincial leaders, his family, teachers, and numerous friends from Ha Tinh Specialized High School.
Mr. Nguyen Cong Hoan, Principal of Ha Tinh Specialized High School, could not hide his joy: “Dinh Cao Son's gold medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad is truly a priceless gift he has given to his family, school, the education sector, his homeland, and the country. This glory comes from his talent, intelligence, determination, and aspiration to conquer the heights of knowledge. This is also the result of the dedication, commitment, and creativity of the teachers at Ha Tinh Specialized High School – those who have accompanied him on the arduous journey to conquer the heights of knowledge.”
Provincial Party Secretary Hoang Trung Dung and other provincial leaders presented flowers to congratulate Dinh Cao Son.
Returning to the warm welcome of his hometown, surrounded by the affection of his teachers and friends at his beloved school, Son's fatigue from his long journey seemed to vanish. His tireless efforts throughout his pursuit of knowledge had finally borne fruit.
“Winning the gold medal at the International Chemistry Olympiad is the result of a long journey of personal effort and the support of my teachers, family, and school. However, this is only the beginning, and in the journey to conquer future challenges, I still have to strive even harder,” Dinh Cao Son shared.
Son is the eldest of two brothers in a family where his parents work as freelancers in Nguyen Du Ward, Ha Tinh City. Despite the hardships of life, Son and his brother always receive encouragement and support from their parents in their studies and lives. For Son, his family is his first school of thought, teaching him the will to strive for success in life.
Ms. Cao Thi Quynh Nga, Son's mother, shared: "To create favorable conditions for our son's studies, we always dedicate time to closely monitor his progress. However, we don't put any pressure or burden on him in his studies; instead, we place our trust in him, encourage him, and motivate him to constantly strive. With a self-discipline, self-improvement, and determination to achieve his goals, Son has worked hard every day. Today's achievement is a reward for his tireless efforts, and the family is very happy and proud."

Thanks to the love and care of his parents and teachers, Son's talent was nurtured and cultivated. While a student at Tran Phu Primary School, he participated in and won numerous awards in various academic competitions. He developed a passion for Chemistry in the 8th grade. Through the teaching of his teachers, each lesson and experiment allowed him to discover more fascinating aspects of chemical substances, leaving him constantly captivated and fascinated by the subject. After achieving top honors in Chemistry at the provincial level in the 9th grade and becoming a student in the Chemistry specialized class at Ha Tinh High School for the Gifted with the highest entrance exam score, Son continued his passion for the subject by researching and studying different types of exam questions.
With the guidance and teaching of the teachers at Ha Tinh Specialized High School, Son gradually achieved his goals with proud accomplishments such as: top scorer in the provincial Chemistry competition in grade 10; second prize in the national Chemistry competition in grade 11; top scorer in the national Chemistry competition, and top scorer in the national Chemistry team selection exam. These achievements serve as motivation and confidence for him to pursue his dream of winning gold on the international stage.

During the more than two months of training with the national team for the international competition, Son had to go through 55 theoretical lessons and nearly 50 practical sessions under the guidance of leading professors and doctors. Carrying with him knowledge, love, and the expectations of his homeland to Europe, Dinh Cao Son overcame psychological pressure to confidently complete his exams.
In my opinion, the theoretical part of this year's International Chemistry Olympiad was quite long and difficult, overwhelming me in the first few minutes. However, Son quickly regained his composure to conquer the exam. Also, in this year's International Chemistry Olympiad, the practical section was included after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic, which was considered a major challenge for Vietnamese contestants. However, with the knowledge he had learned and accumulated, and with determination for his country and his dreams, Son performed well in the practical section, achieving a score of 87%. Ten hours over two days of challenging, intellectually demanding, talent, intelligence, and resilience shone through for Dinh Cao Son.

Surpassing his own expectations on the international stage, Dinh Cao Son won the gold medal with a convincing victory, leading the Vietnamese delegation in points and ranking 7th out of 348 contestants from 89 countries and territories. Son's achievement, along with that of his teammates (3 gold medals, 1 silver medal), also contributed to Vietnam maintaining its position among the top contenders in the IChO competition, ranking 3rd overall in terms of the number of gold medals, with two students among the top 10 highest-scoring contestants.
Overjoyed and proud of his "favorite" student's achievement, Mr. Hoang Van Nam - the homeroom teacher of the Chemistry team at Ha Tinh Specialized High School - shared: "As someone who has been close to him and accompanied him throughout the training and preparation process, what I admire most about Son is his willpower, effort, and determination to achieve his goals. Many times, seeing him diligently and passionately studying, forgetting to eat and sleep to accumulate knowledge, I was really worried, but I could only encourage and motivate him. And the results he achieved are truly amazing."
