Hollywood strike, an opportunity for domestic cinema?

The WGA has ended its strike after 148 days of work stoppage. The agreement is expected to last for three years and will be renegotiated as needed. WGA members will vote to ratify the agreement from October 2-9, so the earliest writers could return to work is this weekend or early next week.

The strikes have stopped but filming has not yet recovered. Hollywood has not been able to resume production due to a lack of actors. Countries that are not much affected by strikes such as China, Korea, Thailand ... will still produce works and the competitive pressure has been significantly reduced compared to normal conditions.

Insiders say that not having to compete with a series of Western blockbusters is an opportunity for Vietnamese cinema in 2024. However, whether Vietnamese filmmakers can take advantage of this opportunity depends on the quality of the work they produce and whether it can win over domestic audiences. If they do not create impressive works from high-quality investment, convey emotions and win over audiences, this opportunity will pass.
