Rural tourism creates momentum for sustainable agricultural development

Rural tourism not only promotes sustainable agricultural development but also contributes to the construction of a civilized and modern new countryside. Developing rural tourism associated with “ecological civilization” is a strategic direction that many localities are aiming for, in order to reduce emissions, increase product value and develop the community.

Recently, at the National Forum "Rural tourism associated with ecological civilization and creating a green living environment" organized by the Center for Agricultural Trade Promotion, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University) in collaboration with other organizations, managers, scientists, and travel agencies had time to share experiences to promote rural tourism development in the direction of "green-smart-circular-low carbon emissions".

Agriculture is not only an economic sector, but also a cultural space and traditional livelihood of the Vietnamese people. Fields, craft villages, gardens, rice fields - all contain indigenous knowledge, farming experience and stories about the relationship between humans and nature. Exploiting indigenous knowledge into unique and engaging stories will be one of the attractions for tourists.

Therefore, in recent years, the trend of sustainable tourism and environmentally responsible tourism has received increasing attention.

Tourists not only want to visit and relax, but also seek experiences that help them better understand the origin of food, the living environment and the stories of local communities. This has opened up outstanding opportunities for green agricultural tourism - a type of tourism based on sustainable agricultural production, respecting the ecosystem and promoting the value of labor.

In Ho Chi Minh City, in addition to heritage discovery tours in the city center, many travel agencies have organized tours to learn about the lives of farmers in suburban areas such as Hoc Mon, Cu Chi, Binh Chanh, Can Gio, Thieng Lieng, Nha Be...

Coming here, in addition to breathing fresh air and enjoying rustic dishes, visitors can also experience traditional crafts such as hat weaving, incense making, salt making... This is also a type of tourism that is popular with foreign visitors when coming to the city.

According to Dr. Le Hoang Dung, Vice Rector of the University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University), in the context of globalization and modernization, tourism, agriculture and rural areas are increasingly affirming their important role, becoming a sustainable development orientation of Vietnam's tourism industry.

“Therefore, developing rural tourism contributes to increasing income, promoting the agricultural economy, while helping to preserve cultural identity, promoting the value of natural resources and indigenous knowledge. These are extremely valuable 'green assets' of rural Vietnam,” Dr. Le Hoang Dung emphasized.

According to Mr. Tran Quang Duy, Penguin Travel Company, Ho Chi Minh City, building green agricultural tourism products is not only about exploiting the landscape, but also about introducing a system of living values.

“As a travel business, I realize that agricultural tourism products are only truly competitive when they are designed into meaningful experiences, involve the local community, and create an emotional connection between tourists and the land they visit,” said Mr. Tran Quang Duy.

Mr. Tran Quang Duy added that the company builds green agricultural tourism products not only to “go and see”, but to experience-interact-learn-transform awareness. Through that, tourists will better understand the value of clean agriculture, appreciate the efforts of farmers, and better understand the role of each individual in protecting the environment.

According to Associate Professor, Dr. Ngo Thi Thu Trang, Head of the Department of Geography, University of Social Sciences and Humanities (Ho Chi Minh City National University), to develop agricultural and rural tourism associated with ecological civilization and green living environment, it is necessary to focus on the following key groups: developing multi-value agricultural economy; perfecting OCOP criteria for agricultural and rural tourism; building green thinking and criteria; preserving local architecture and identity; the community as a creative subject; attracting young human resources; using tourism as an ambassador for agricultural products; promoting the application of science and technology and digital transformation; and regional linkages - public-private cooperation.

Associate Professor, Dr. Pham Trung Luong, Member of the National Planning Advisory Group, said that we need to innovate our thinking about rural planning, especially in areas with tourism potential associated with indigenous cultural values. He emphasized that building a system of tourism product and service standards towards enhancing authentic experiences of people and nature is something that needs to be done soon; at the same time, combining improving the capacity of destination management and rural infrastructure to meet development needs and adapt to climate change.

Mr. Nguyen Minh Tien, Director of the Agricultural Trade Promotion Center, said that in the context of the global strong orientation towards green growth and commitment to Net Zero by 2050, rural tourism is not only a driving force for sustainable agricultural development but also a foundation for creating a green living environment for the community.

“We believe that with the close cooperation of units, many attractive rural tourism products will be formed, helping to increase people's income and create a harmonious future between economy and ecology, towards sustainable prosperity,” Mr. Nguyen Minh Tien added.
